Swine flu spreads in Nakhon Ratchasima

A total of 220 patients and hospital staff remain under close observation at Nakhon Ratchasima's Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital following an outbreak of the H1N1 swine flu virus there, said Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri.

Speaking in Ayutthaya yesterday, Mr Witthaya said the surveillance was necessary after the number of patients and staff infected at the hospital in central Nakhon Ratchasima rose yesterday.

On Tuesday, 28 people were infected. Of them, 24 are hospital patients, two are staff members and the other two are their children. The patients are in quarantine and under observation at the hospital, while the staff and their children are under quarantine at home.

Yesterday, the number of infected rose to 41.

Thirty-six of them are patients at the hospital and five others are hospital staff, the minister said.

Mr Witthaya said the conditions of the infected people have generally improved after they were administered with the antiviral drug, Oseltamivir.

The 220 other patients and staff of the hospital who may have been exposed to the flu have to stay under close observation over the next seven days, he said.

Mr Witthaya said that apart from 41 infected people at the hospital, no new H1N1 cases have been detected elsewhere. He was confident the virus has been contained. Vaccines can be taken to prevent the virus, while those infected will be fully cured. About 90 of the 300 people around the infected hospital have been vaccinated, the minister said.

Nurse's two daughters 'spread swine flu'

Two daughters of a nurse at Nakhon Ratchasima's Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital caused an outbreak of H1N1 swine flu among 41 medical staff and patients, an investigation has revealed.

Public health officials have not established how and where the siblings, whose names have been withheld, contacted the virus, but found they spread it to their mother who works at the hospital in Muang district, said Lalitaya Kongkham, deputy director of the Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima hospital.

The girls, who are studying at Matthayom 3 and 5 (Grade 9 and 11) of Suranari Witthaya School in Muang district, had a high fever on June 8.

On June 19, 22 more people at the hospital, including their mother, were found infected with the virus. The following day, the number of infections rose sharply to 41. Thirty-five are patients and six are medical staff.

The Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital and public health officials yesterday conducted medical check-ups for 1,200 Matthayom 3 and 5 students at the school, but did not find anybody with a high fever.

2009 influenza H1N1 under control in Thailand's northeast

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, June 21 - The 2009 influenza H1N1 situation is now under control and no more patients have been found affected with the virus, according to Nakhon Ratchasima Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital deputy director Dr Norachart Ratanachata.

Forty-one people were confirmed Wednesday as being infected with 2009 influenza H1N1 in this northeastern province. Most of them have improved conditions, he said.

The patients were given Tamiflu, a drug for the treatment of flu infections including bird flu, and have been under quarantine for 14 days.

About one-third of the hospital's staff (out of 350) have already received an injection for flu prevention. Anybody with a temperature higher than 38 degrees will be sent for a thorough and immediate medical checkup.

Meanwhile, Dr Lalitya Kongkam, deputy director of Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, said the 41 patients at the other hospital have responded well to the Tamiflu treatment.
