Swan carcasses found in Westboro, a few infected with avian flu

WESTBORO ? A battery of tests by state and federal inspectors on a dozen swan carcasses found in a local pond revealed that four of the dead birds tested positive for avian influenza.

The low-pathogenic, or relatively mild, avian influenza the birds had does not pose a threat to human health, state officials said...

State officials confirm that four dead swans recently found in Westborough were carrying the disease.

?This is fairly common for water fowl,? Zimmerman said, stressing that there is no risk to humans from this finding. ?We can?t say for sure this was the cause of death for these birds. But we can say they were carrying the virus.?

Zimmerman told Westborough Patch that most water fowl and wild birds carry a mild form of this virus.

A spokesman for the state Division of Fisheries & Wildlife tells the Telegram & Gazette that four birds tested positive for a mild form of avian flu that's relatively common, and humans are not in danger of catching the disease.

The particular strain of avian influenza found in the swans is not mentioned in any of the articles that I have found. Apparently it is low pathogenic.
