263 ILI Cases Last Week


KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 (Bernama) -- A total of 263 new patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms were admitted for treatment at hospitals nationwide last week (Feb 21-27), while 272 patients with similar symptoms were discharged within the same period.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican, in a statement here today, said the total number of ILI patients being treated as of Feb 27 stood at 355 cases, involving 40 government hospitals and four private ones.

"Of the total, 17 patients or 5.1 per cent are confirmed Influenza A(H1N1) cases. Till Feb 27, cumulative A(H1N1) cases stood 12,456," he said.

He said eight of the 17 patients were being treated at Intensive Care Units with five of them having risk factors.

Dr Ismail said five ILI cluster cases were reported last week, one each at two National Service training camps -- the Benom Hill camp in Raub involving 18 trainees and the Etnobotani camp in Gua Musang where 39 trainees were affected.

The other cluster cases involved the HLM Autopart KIP factory in Kepong here (11 workers), Kolej CIAST in Section 19, Shah Alam (19 students) and Kampung Sawah Batu in Pekan, Pahang (eight Orang Asli (indigenous people)).

He added that vaccine injections for those at high risk of infection had commenced since last week and that people who had been categorised as at high risk could get the injections at 104 government facilities designated for the purpose.

KUALA LUMPUR: Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cases in the country saw a sharp rise as 363 new cases were referred to hospitals from March 7-13, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican.

This was a 22.2% increase when compared with 297 cases recorded the previous week, but there were no deaths, he said.

"As of last week, the total number of ILI cases being treated at 38 government hospitals and eight private hospitals was 404 cases which also showed a 12.8% increase compared with the previous week," said Dr Mohd Ismail in a statement.

Dr Mohd Ismail said five ILI cluster cases were reported throughout last week - two in Ayer Keroh, Malacca involving six people, 12 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Limbang, Sarawak, three from Perkampungan Orang Asli, Kampung Permatang Keledang, Pekan, Pahang and three people from a family in Kampung Kota, Kota Baharu, Kelantan.

Four cluster cases were positive while the fifth from Kampung Kota was awaiting test reports from the lab, he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail added that from the Health Ministries observation, there was no sign of another wave of H1N1. - Bernama

16 cases of A(H1N1) in Johor this year

MUAR: Sixteen cases of influenza A(H1N1) have been reported in Johor this year, State Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said.

She said the affected areas were Batu Pahat with 10 cases, Kluang (three), and one case each in Ledang, Muar and Johor Baru.

The case in Batu Pahat, she added, was confined to a school in Yong Peng where a teacher and nine students were down with the virus.

?They have all been given treatment and are now cured,? she said after opening a Muar open basketball tournament in Parit Jawa on Wednesday night.

Dr Robia said the three cases in Kluang were reported at Simpang Renggam Prison.

They too have been cured.
