Swine flu slams colleges before vaccine arrives

Swine flu already is affecting students at U.S. colleges that have started their fall semester -- long before a vaccine arrives on the campuses.
More than 30 University of Kansas students have come down with the virus. And similar reports from elsewhere in the nation are likely to increase as more college classes start.
(My daughter began her fall semester at the University of Oklahoma today, so fingers already are crossed back here in KC.)
College authorities say they will urge their students to get the swine flu vaccine -- when it arrives, which isn't scheduled for up to two months or well into October.
That means millions of university students potentially will be exposed to the virus in the coming weeks.
Some will just have to stay at home or in their apartments/dorms for a few days until they feel better.
Some may end up in a hospital.
And in the worst case scenario, some college students may die, specifically because the swine flu seems to be targeting a number of young and usually healthy people.
Until the vaccine arrives, university administrators are offering the by-now standard advice: Wash hands regularly, sneeze into your sleeve and don't go to class if you are sick.
