LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) ? There are multiple confirmed cases of viral meningitis on the campus of University of Maryland.

The Director of the University Health Center, Dr. David McBride, will not say the exact number, but he tells WNEW that there are multiple confirmed and suspected cases...

These cases are in College Park campus, not Lanham. Not sure why the news would say Lanham then post a picture from the College Park campus. College Park is the main campus of University of Maryland.

Because not all students report symptoms at University Health Center, actual number of cases may differ

Less than a week after the University Health Center verified reports of multiple meningitis cases at this university, director David McBride confirmed that the number of sick students has grown.

As of tonight, doctors have confirmed 19 cases of viral meningitis among university students, McBride wrote in an email to The Diamondback. That statistic has at least doubled from Saturday when he stated that ?there are less than 10 students with a diagnosis.?

But that number might not account for every case at this university...

Enterovirus May Have Caused Maryland Meningitis Outbreak
A respiratory illness that has swept the nation could be taking on a new form, but further testing is needed.

...In Maryland, the state public health lab is conducting a broad range of testing on specimens submitted to the agency, state epidemiologist Dr. David Blythe says. Agency officials would not specify whether testing for EV-68 was occurring and did not confirm whether samples had been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. County health officials say that testing will occur at either the state level or be performed by the CDC.

Five viral meningitis cases at the University of Maryland were confirmed as having been caused by an enterovirus, according to the University Health Center, and it's possible the EV-68 strain is causing the outbreak at the school, where more than 20 students have been infected. However, there are more than 100 enterovirus strains that also could be responsible.

So far, only one instance of the specific meningitis-enterovirus-68 match has been confirmed recently in the U.S. In Connecticut, an elementary school student tested positive Thursday for both viral meningitis and EV-68...

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ)?There have been 31 confirmed or suspected cases of viral meningitis among the University of Maryland student population, and the University Health Center says it is continuing to see levels of activity.

In a letter to the student body, the health center confirms 19 of those students have been hospitalized.

The virus causing the infection has been confirmed as a strain of enterovirus called ECHO virus, a common cause of viral meningitis outbreaks. In otherwise healthy people, the course of the illness is generally uncomfortable and similar to the flu? fever, headache, light sensitivity and stiff neck. Those affected typically have symptoms for three to five days...
