More than 19,000 people have been displaced by a volcano in Indonesia that has been erupting for months and shot lava into the air nine times overnight, an official said Tuesday.

Mount Sinabung on the western island of Sumatra sent hot rocks and ash 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) in the air Monday night and Tuesday morning, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

“Mount Sinabung remains on the highest alert level and we have warned there should be no human activity within a five-kilometer (three-mile) radius of the crater,” Sutopo said.

Dramatic footage captured pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock, glowing red and rare phenomenon like volcanic lighting as Mount Sinabung in Indonesia's North Sumatra province erupted again on Sunday.

The volcano was seen spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 13,000 feet in several eruptions.

More than 26,000 villagers have been evacuated since authorities raised the alert status for the volcano to the highest level in November 2013.

Indonesia's Mount Sinabung erupts again, killing at least 14

FEBRUARY 01, 2014

AT LEAST 14 people have been killed after a volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra spewed lava and hot gas, an aid worker says.

"It is likely we'll find more victims," Benny Kaban, a local Protestant minister and aid worker, said by telephone.

Those caught up in the latest eruption include three men who were being treated in intensive care for burn injuries after being engulfed in scorching clouds from Mount Sinabung.

The volcano in North Sumatra's Karo district has been erupting since September, displacing more than 30,000 people.

On Friday the disaster management agency had allowed people living in villages more than 5km (3 miles) from the mountain to return home.

But a day later, Sinabung spewed hot rocks and ash up to 2km in the air.
