110 die in first wave of new flu in Hungary

A total of 110 people have died in connection with the new flu in Hungary so far, a quarter of whom were in good health before contracting the virus, the chief medical officer told reporters on Monday.

Five of those who died were pregnant women, none of them had been vaccinated against the H1N1 virus, said Ferenc Falus.

Currently 11 pregnant women are treated in hospital, one of them is breathing with the help of a machine, he added.

Of the around 80,000 pregnant women 17 percent had chosen to get vaccinated against the virus, Falus said.

He said the first wave of the new flu pandemic was over, but expected a new wave to come some time in the spring.

By the first week of January around 30 percent of Hungarians were vaccinated against the virus, Falus said earlier.

112 people dies of A/H1N1 influenza in Hungary
04.02.2010 01:42
In all 112 people have died of the A/H1N1 influenza in Hungary, Hungarian Health Minister Tamas Szekely told a news conference in Budapest on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
Over 353,000 people have become ill with the disease and nearly three million received inoculations (Hungary's total population is 10 million), Szekely said. He added that last week 15,400 people sought medical care for flulike symptoms, a slight increase over the two preceding weeks.
Szekely said that on Thursday Hungary will close down the special vaccination centers opened to offer residents inoculations against the A/H1N1 influenza. About 92,000 of the inoculations were administered at the special centers. Should public demand for the shots grow once again, the centers will reopen, he added.
Vaccinations will continue to be available despite the center closings. The regional facilities operated by the public health service will be equipped to offer shots to people who may want them. In addition, pharmacies are stocking the vaccine and primary care physicians will inoculate anyone on request.
