Shaheen Bagh has reported 5 suspected deaths and approximately 100 cases of the deadly viral disease this season

Temperatures are rising among the residents of this southeast Delhi colony and doctors are concerned. Shaheen Bagh is a small but densely populated locality neighbouring Jamia Nagar. The area has reported 5 suspected dengue deaths and about 100 cases in the last month or so.

The locality itself is not exactly a sight for sore eyes - there is no proper drainage, piles of mud and puddles of water greet you at every corner with flies and mosquitoes buzzing over them. A breath of fresh air is a distant dream, so is proper medical care.

"Several patients have come to me in the past few days; they all had dengue-like symptoms. High fever, vomiting, bodyache, weakness, decrease in platelet count, leucopenia, restlessness etc are all signs of dengue. Few of them are being treated at our centre. Others have been referred to various hospitals. The first case came to us on the 20th of July; since then many more cases have come to light," said a senior doctor from the area on condition of anonymity.

A second-year fashion designing student and a second-year B tech student were the first reported casualties.

8 more dengue cases in capital

NEW DELHI: Delhi reported eight new cases of dengue on Monday, taking the total number of people affected by the mosquito-borne disease in the city to 121 so far, an official said.

?Eight more people have tested positive for dengue in Delhi on Monday but no deaths were reported,? Municipal Corporation of Delhi?s chief medical officer NK Yadav said.

Commenting on the rise in dengue cases, VK Monga, chairman, health committee, MCD, said: ?There is an alarming increase in dengue cases this year, as the majority of breeding was found in Commonwealth Games construction sites. About 121 cases of dengue have been recorded till Monday compared to just ten cases last year.?

Vasant Kunj grapples with dengue, malaria

The situation is far from healthy in one of Delhi's swankiest localities. The resident's of D-block in Vasant Kunj are living in constant dread these days as dengue and malaria rule the roost.

Though it's the Monsoon season, the conditions are a lot worse this time around. The reason being cited is the waterlogging problem at the location of the DDA's housing project with 5000 under-construction flats coming up for the Commonwealth Games. The stark reality is that beneath the lanky buildings, there is a massive accumulation of water in the basement in one of the parking areas causing mosquito breeding for both dengue and malaria.

The workers at the site are bearing the brunt of it but it has also taken its toll on the locals. The tally of suspected and confirmed cases is at 36 with the majority of them being reported from D-6, D-7 and D-8 of Vasant Kunj. The nuisance has persisted for almost a month now but the MCD says that despite repeated challans and reprimand, the DDA has not initiated any action so far.The construction workers toiling for 12 hours a day to meet the Games deadline have been hit hard. The MCD has already challaned Chief Engineer R K Aggarwal, Executive Engineer A K Jha and several junior engineers in this regard but that hasn't changed anything.

According to a source in the MCD's health department, the problem started about 20 days ago with the onset of monsoon and despite numerous warnings no action was taken to draw water out of the basement. "MCD inspectors have visited this site time and again but the private contractors seem to ignore the repeated warnings. The rate of mosquito multiplication is high and so would be the mortality rate if the problem is not dealt with seriously," he said.

7 more dengue cases in Delhi, total 174

Seventeen more patients tested positive for dengue in the city on Thursday, taking the count this season to 174.

MCD health official N K Yadav said, "17 people tested positive for dengue fever since yesterday, taking the total number of people affected by the virus to 174."

He also said that the threat of dengue is more this year and precautions should be taken by all.

Jamia Nagar battles dengue outbreak

Jamia Nagar, home to five lakh people in South-East Delhi reports more than 40 cases of dengue every day, which is twice the number that Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) records from across the Capital. Local hospitals receive more than 100 suspected cases of dengue daily from six areas that form Jamia Nagar- Batla house, Abul Fazal Enclave, Shaheen Baagh, Zakir Nagar, Jauhri Farm and Noor Nagar - and the adjacent areas such as Nai Basti and Joga Bai extension.

Doctors at the two hospitals ? Holy family and Maxfort ?claim that the civic agency responsible for recording the data is grossly understating the numbers. ?Out of every 10 suspected dengue cases that come to our casualty ward, eight are confirmed cases of dengue,? said Dr Shamshir Akhtar, a senior doctor at Maxfort.

The situation is worse at the Holy Family hospital. They have run out of beds to accommodate more dengue patients and have put up a signage indicating the same. They are referring patients to hospitals such as Apollo and Batra.

Dengue cases shoot up in Delhi

Delhi is under the grip of dengue but the municipal authorities are busy fudging figures to save face. Headlines Today has found that the number of dengue patients in the city is at least four times that recorded by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

For the records, Delhi has reported only 322 positive cases of dengue. But a check of five hospitals in the city has revealed nearly 1,400 cases.

Holy Family Hospital alone has had 599 confirmed cases of dengue in just a month. The Max hospitals in Saket and Patparganj together have recorded 224 cases in a little over a month.

Moolchand Hospital saw 450 confirmed cases in July and August while RML Hospital recorded 80 cases this month. At LNJP Hospital, records show 45 cases in August alone.

The number of cases is rising daily. On Thursday, 25 people tested positive for dengue.

Dengue downs 35 more; case tally at 419

With Delhi reporting 35 new cases of dengue on Sunday, the total number of victims of the vector-borne diseases has now reached 419. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has blamed intermittent rains for the rise. "This is the season for vector-borne diseases but we are taking all the necessary action," a senior MCD official said.

On Saturday, Delhi reported 36 new cases, the highest in a day for this season.

The Delhi government has launched a 12-hour special helpline ? (011)22307145 ? which will remain operational from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It has issued several advisories in various newspapers urging people not to panic along with stating symptoms and preventive measures for the disease.

Mumbai doctor dies of dengue

MUMBAI: A doctor died of dengue in Mumbai Monday taking the toll due to the deadly fever this season to four, an official said.

Doctor Rajan Palav, 32, was an ENT (ear, nose and throat) professor at the Grant Medical College, run by the JJ Group of Hospitals.

"He had been keeping unwell since Wednesday. His reports were positive for dengue and he was getting treated at Hinduja Hospital," said TP Lahane, dean of JJ Hospital.

"He avoided getting admitted to JJ Hospital as it was already overflowing with patients and wanted to avoid spreading infection," Lahne added.

Palav is the fourth case of dengue death in Mumbai this season. Nearly 150 patients have been detected with dengue so far, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said.

69 new dengue cases in Delhi, total 434


At least 69 new cases of dengue were reported in Delhi since Sunday, taking the number of those infected by the mosquito-borne disease to 434 this year, an official of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said on Monday. According to an advertisement given by MCD in a newspaper on Monday, it
has issued 45,532 legal notices against owners of property where water stagnation was found. These conditions lead to breeding of mosquitoes.

"A total of 6,125 persons have been prosecuted. The civic body has also released advisory in newspapers, stating the symptoms of and preventive measures for the vector-borne disease and urging the people not to panic. The state government has launched a 12-hour special helpline -- 22307145 -- which will be operational from 8 am to 8 pm," the advertisement said.

Mosquito breeding has been detected in 44,743 houses in various parts of the city. The south zone of the civic agency has been the worst affected with 94 cases of dengue being reported so far, the MCD said.

Dengue is transmitted to humans by the aedes aegypti mosquito and its symptoms include fever, joint and bone pain, nausea, headache and fatigue.

Now, chikungunya rears its head

It?s the season for mosquito-borne illnesses. After malaria and dengue, yet another mosquito-borne viral illness, chikungunya, has reared its head, much to the dismay of overburdened doctors and patients in the city.

?There has been a sudden spurt in dengue and chikungunya cases,? said Dr Om Shrivastav, consultant on infectious diseases, Jaslok Hospital, and unit head at Kasturba.

According to doctors, what is worrying is that the infection may go unrecognised or be misdiagnosed as dengue. This is because chikungunya symptoms, like chills, joint pain, body ache, etc, are quite similar to the ones for dengue.

Growing dengue cases cause concern

With 54 fresh cases reported on Wednesday, the total number of dengue cases in the capital reached 530, raising questions over the ability of the civic agencies to check the spread of the disease in time for the Common-wealth Games. The fact that the incidence of dengue tends to go up in the month of September and continues till the better part of October, which is the time when the Games are going to be held, can only worsen the situation.

A dengue awareness and prevention programme was launched by the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences. The hospital has organised a preview of its facilities and full preparedness to deal with dengue cases reported from Delhi and the surrounding NCR areas.

Pandey, chief surgeon, Chairman & MD, AIMS, said, ?It is essential to promote dengue awareness and dengue prevention camps in Delhi, NCR regions. 50-100 million dengue fever infections per year are reported globally. One dies of dengue in Delhi, 59 new cases reported

An 11-year-old girl died of dengue in the national capital as 59 more new cases of the mosquito-borne disease were reported, an official said on Thursday. "The girl was admitted in Safdarjung hospital and was a resident of Delhi," N K Yadav, chief medical officer of Municipal Corporation of Delhi
(MCD), told IANS.

This takes to two the number of confirmed deaths due to dengue. Three deaths due to suspected dengue have also been reported in the capital.

The capital also reported 59 new cases of dengue, taking the total number of infected people to 609, Yadav added.

The Delhi government has launched a 12-hour special helpline -- 22307145 -- which will be operational 8 am-8 pm.

In addition, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Shahdara and Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital are operating 24 hours to treat the patients.

65 test positive for dengue on Friday; count reaches 674

Delhiites saw season's highest confirmed cases of dengue on Friday with 65 more patients testing positive for the mosquito-borne disease. With this the number of people affected by this disease has reached a massive figure of 674. Among the total 674 cases reported so far, 558 have been recorded from MCD areas, 84 from NDMC areas. The rest cases include patients from other parts of the city as well as patients from other States. Among the fresh cases , the highest 14 were reported from MCD Civil Lines zone, followed by 11 cases from the South Zone.

According to statistics released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the numbers of cases till this time in 2009 were only four. The figure was 67 and 17 in the same periods in 2008 and 2007 respectively.

According to the MCD, in the previous years, the number of dengue cases and deaths were 1,153 and 3 (2009), 1,312 and 2(2008), 548 and 1 2007) and 3,366 and 36 (2006).

With 67 new cases, dengue tally now 741

NEW DELHI: The number of dengue cases are increasing on an alarming rate in the capital. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reported 67 new cases on Saturday. With this, the number of dengue cases has risen to 741.

"The number of cases would only increase now. With sporadic rains, there is lot of breeding happening in various pockets of Delhi. A majority of cases are coming from south and central zone,'' said Dr NK Yadav, MHO, MCD.

Meanwhile, city hospitals continue to report high incidence of dengue cases. Doctors say people are reporting with high grade fever and body ache.

Dengue cases climbs to 1,226 in national capital

The threat of vector borne disease looms large over Delhi, as the entire National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed a spurt in infections over the last few days.

With 71 fresh cases surfacing Saturday, the total number of dengue cases in the city went up to 1,226.

According to official sources, out of the total cases so far, 1,061 have been reported from Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) areas and 125 from New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC) areas.

The remaining cases have emerged from other parts of the city while some are from some outstation. The total number of deaths due to dengue has been three this season.

The south zone is the hardest hit accounting for 205 cases followed closely by the central zone which reported 176 cases.

In addition, the Civil Lines and Rohini Zones have reported 144 and 126 infections respectively.

Dengue: A battle almost lost

The dengue outbreak in Delhi has taken over the security concerns of countries participating in the Commonwealth Games. Twenty-four participating countries have already bombarded the Organising Committee (OC) with queries about the dengue-preparedness in the city. A host of countries, including Malaysia and Australia, have also issued travel advisories for their nationals coming to Delhi for the Games.

The civic agencies responsible for keeping a check on mosquito breeding have found that Games sites are the hotbeds for mosquito breeding.

Most of the Games sites such as Yamuna Sports Complex, CWG village, Indira Gandhi Stadium and RK Khanna Sports Complex, have been fined a number of times by the civic agencies for mosquito breeding. ?The Games Village is particularly in a bad shape. Our preventive measures there have proved futile because of its location and present condition.

The entry points to the Village and the roads outside it are completely waterlogged resulting in massive mosquito breeding,? said V.K. Monga, chairman of MCD?s Public Health Committee. ?The water has to be drained out from the surrounding area otherwise the situation will get out of control,? added Monga.

Seven thousand athletes will be staying at this village. Emaar MGF that has constructed the Games Village has said it is not responsible for taking any measures outside the Village boundary. ?We have handed over the Village to the OC and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

Flooded with dengue patients, GTB struggles

NEW DELHI: With the number of dengue cases rising everyday, GTB Hospital is having a tough time dealing with the flood of patients. Sources said the hospital, which is getting dengue patients not only from Delhi but also from Uttar Pradesh, is facing a serious shortage of platelets and other blood products.

As per hospital record, 40 suspected dengue patients were admitted on Tuesday. GTB Hospital's medical superintendent, Dr UC Verma, admitted that that number of patients is overwhelming. "We are putting two-three patients on each bed, but there is no shortage of blood,'' he said.

But doctors at the hospital said their request for blood and blood products is often denied by the blood bank. Sources say the blood bank lacks sufficient technical staff to make platelets and other blood products. "I lost a patient, whose platelet count was 6000-7000 because the blood bank refused to release platelets. Whenever we send a request to the blood bank it is denied,'' said a senior doctor with the medicine department at the hospital.

Dengue control: DDT back in reckoning

DDT (Dichloro-diphenyl- trichloroethane), the weapon of choice against malaria till three decades ago, could make a comeback to take on dengue.

Earlier, mosquitoes had become resistant to the insecticide due to overuse. But, new reports from countries like Zambia and Uganda suggest DDT is again becoming effective against certain types of mosquitos. The cheap chemical was banned by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2004 due to its impact on human health and the environment. But in 2006 the WHO gave a clean chit and said DDT can be safely used in public health programmes. DDT had helped considerably in the eradication of malaria from southern Europe and North America in the 1960s.

While the government gave the green signal for using synthetic pyrethroids, used in anti-malaria operations in some South East Asian countries, at the CWG sites, the rest of the city will have to rely on traditional measures like spraying of larvicides and fogging to combat the disease.

Dengue outbreak causes camp shift

New Delhi: In a shocking development, the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) has decided to shift its Commonwealth Games camp from Delhi to Patiala following an outbreak of dengue fever among the cyclists.

Confirming the news, a senior CFI official said: ?The decision to shift the camp was taken after 18 of our 27 campers suffered from dengue fever, gastroenteritis and chicken pox. Our Australian coach (Graham Seers) has advised the federation to immediately take the camp back to Patiala.?

Delhi is reeling under dengue attacks since June and nearly 1500 cases have already been reported in local hospitals. While 25 participating nations have sent letters to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) enquiring about the disease, a host of countries including Australia and Malaysia have recently issued travel advisories for their citizens coming to Delhi for the Games.

?At this rate, it would have been difficult to field the side for the Commonwealth Games,? said the CFI official. ?Two of our coaches, Amandeep Singh (coach track) and Narender Singh (coach technician) also suffered from dengue a few days ago,? he added.

Around 30 Cases Confirmed, Alert Sounded In Areas Bordering Delhi

LUCKNOW: Beware. The femme fatale is on prowl. Aedes Aegypti, the female mosquito carrier of dengue virus, also called as Tiger Mosquito, has sneaked into UP after playing havoc in Delhi. While over 50 cases of suspected dengue have been reported from 14 districts of the state, around 30 have been confirmed.

The female mosquito loves to bite men. Among her first victims in the state are state transport minister Ramachal Rajbhar and officer on special duty in chief minister's office Mewalal Gautam, besides a few doctors and three policemen. Of the 30 odd cases, 15 were being treated in Lucknow and five in Meerut. An alert has been sounded in areas bordering Delhi but health department emphasised on the need of taking preventive measures instead of panic.

The patients in the city are under treatment in Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) and Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science (SGPGIMS). A couple of CSMMU students have also reported symptoms of dengue. "Their blood samples have been sent for testing. We have also ordered fogging on the hospital campus and in the hostels," said Prof SN Shankhwar, chief medical superintendent, CSMMU. He also said that there was enough stock of platelets in university's blood bank. Prof AK Tripathi, haematologist, CSMMU, said that the two earliest patients found to be suffering from dengue had travelled to Delhi.
