In a meeting titled National Petechia Fever Prevention Project held on January 31 in HCM City, Deputy Minister of Health Services Trinh Quan Huan said that petechia fever could turn into an epidemic as happened in Vietnam in 1998. The epidemic may be particularly serious in central and southern regions.

In the 1998 outbreak, 232,790 people throughout the country caught petechia fever, and 447 died.

According to the Ministry of Health Services, in 2006, more than 77,800 people were diagnosed with petechia fever and 68 died. The south was the region with the greatest number of infected and dead. The number of people infected was 65,700, accounting for 84% of total cases reported, and 62 died. Provinces and localities with high numbers of incidences were An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Kien Giang and HCM City.

The outbreak in the central region wasn?t too serious but dragged on for quite a time.

The campaign to eliminate mosquitoes that cause petechia fever was carried out on time but was formalistic and wasn?t sustained. Other activities such as disease tracking and mosquito larvae elimination activities weren?t coordinated at the national level.

To prevent another outbreak in 2007, the Ministry of Health Services has instructed provinces to watch closely for cases of infection and conditions which could facilitate an outbreak.
