Mumbai: A total of 22 out of the 33 districts in the state have been affected by swine flu, additional chief secretary Sharvaree Gokhale said on Monday. "It has started spreading in rural areas now," she said.

Screening centres have been set up in every district that has suspected patients, Gokhale said. But restricting crowds will not help stop the spread of the disease, she said.

According to figures available with the government, almost all 14 hospitals which were allowed to start screening patients for swine flu have started doing so. "They are screening 350 to 400 patients a day," said a health department official. But only28patients have been admitted in these hospitals.
The official said the higher cost of treatment in these hospitals could be the reason. "BMC and government hospitals have been rid of the task of treating these 'VIP' patients," the official said. "Most patients from the elite class used to press officials for priority treatment. They can now opt for private hospitals."
Gokhale said the government has no control on what private hospitals charge. "Tamiflu is being provided to them free of charge. We have no control over other charges they recover from patients."
