News Release from the Fresno County Health Department:

The Fresno County Department of Public Health reports the first Pandemic (H1N1) Flu 2009 related death in a Fresno County resident. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of Pandemic H1N1 Influenza virus in a sample submitted from the young adult who was in his late twenties.

In accordance with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for Pandemic H1N1 Flu 2009, Department of Public Health staff identified close contacts and provided instruction regarding antiviral treatment and prophylaxis for those who are symptomatic or at high risk for complications of influenza infection.

?Department staff and I would like to convey our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased,? states Dr. Edward Moreno, Fresno County Department of Public Health, Director and Health Officer. ?Pandemic
H1N1 Flu 2009 is circulating in our community and throughout the nation. Most cases of this illness have been of mild to moderate severity, but infection with this virus strain can be deadly, especially for children and young
adults. Everyone should remain vigilant in the effort to reduce the spread of H1N1 and seasonal flu.?
