First death confirmed

The tri-county area has suffered its first swine flu death.
The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit on Monday night confirmed "the death of an area resident who had the H1N1 influenza virus." "The death occurred in an adult resident who also had an underlying medical condition," added the heath unit's press release which, in keeping with the agency's usual policy, provides no further details about the individual.
"It is never easy losing a loved one and I offer my condolences to the family of this individual," medical officer of health Dr. Anne Carter adds in the prepared statement.
Health unit spokesman Susan Healey said the health unit got confirmation of the death on Friday.
Healey did not know whether the victim was male or female and, while emphasizing the deceased was not a child, she did not know the person's age.
The underlying medical condition likely had more to do with this tragedy than the victim's age, she said.
Healey said she believes the victim died at a hospital in Ottawa.
