The recent death of an elderly Sangamon County resident marked the county's first fatality connected with H1N1 flu, the county's public health department director said today.

Jim Stone, director of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health, said he received confirmation Monday night that the resident, who died in the past week, had H1N1 flu and also had "underlying medical conditions" that may have contributed to the person's death.
Nationwide this year, H1N1 flu has led to a higher number of deaths among non-elderly Americans than has been associated with regular, seasonal flu in previous years, so the H1N1-related death of a Sangamon County senior citizen was "outside of the norm," Stone said.
