South Dakota Resident Dies Of H1N1

South Dakota's Department of Health reported the first death from H1N1 influenza Friday. The department says the patient was a Shannon County resident, between 40-49 years old, who had underlying health conditions.

Since the beginning of the 2009-2010 flu season, South Dakota has reported 191 lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 flu and 25 hospitalizations. Young children make up most of the cases; 72 percent of confirmed cases and 61 percent of related hospitalizations in South Dakota are among those younger than 19.

The state expects to offer H1N1 vaccine to high risk groups such as pregnant women and young children by mid-October.

We've been very lucky here in South Dakota, but what they're not saying about this first death is that Shannon County is predominantly the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I know that in Canada there has been a disproportionately large number of fatalities in the aboriginal population. I am concerned about that here too.
