Student tells of measles terror

Don't try to tell Felicity Lyme that measles is a mild disease.

"Measles is like the flu on crack," she says. The Victoria University student, 19, should know ? she was the first person in Wellington to become infected during the current outbreak.

What started out as a flu-like illness rapidly turned into something more dangerous, landing her in an isolation unit in Wellington Hospital for three days as her body raged against the infection.

"It was more debilitating than I would ever have thought. I couldn't move ... I couldn't even go to the bathroom by myself."

A fever that peaked at just over 40 degrees Celsius brought on frightening hallucinations, she said. "I didn't know where I was..."
