As of yesterday, there had been no outbreaks in Kien Giang Province for the last 21 days, meeting the international standard to declare a province free from the lethal virus.
Local authorities in bird flu-hit localities were sparing no efforts in carrying out drastic measures to keep the outbreak under control. Bac Lieu's animal health officials killed as many as 950 birds in Ninh Hoa Commune in Hong Dan District on Sunday.
A day earlier, over a thousand poultry were culled in the same province.
Localities were continuing to inoculate newly-hatched birds to protect them from bird flu, and over 8.9mil poultry, mostly ducks, have been vaccinated so far.
Together with cities like Hanoi and HCM City, the northern province of Hai Duong has joined hands with the United Nations to launch a communication campaign to raise the awareness of local residents of the danger and preventive measures against avian influenza as part of the Vietnamese government's efforts to quickly eradicate the epidemic.
Under the drive, entitled "Joining Hands to Keep Viet Nam Avian Influenza Free," information dissemination programmes through various media, including distributing leaflets to every household across the province, have been accelerated.
Bird flu had returned to Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta late last year after the country controlled the virus for a year.
