All to often this type of information takes to long to filter down to the public via the local media.

Just two or three days ago the public was warned via local tv, not to eat one type of the mentioned fish above. as its one of the cheaper staple foods from the fish sector many locals and myself enjoy.

Thanks Twall. I am very worried about the food supply in Egypt.

There have been bread shortages. The price of poultry and meat is increasing and also pigs are not eaten anymore.

Today I posted a story about a potential problem with rice.

Can you tell us how the over all food situation is?

Let me start with the tap water.

we as locals that total four in number (which I'm not really) with some degree of education,and i speak only in the context of my own family.

we only use the local water for bathing,or for hot-drinks and cooking. as all to often the underground lines leak and with the related pressure drops that often occur, it sets a vacuum in action which can pull other runoff materials into the clean water stream.even my wifes family, that does use the local water always boils it then lets it settle and then freezes it in other bottles prior to drinking. as do many others here.but not all.

we purchase on average sixty liters of bottled water a week. which cost about seven dollars a week, just for drinking purposes for three people.I boil water for ice tea and lemon aid for myself which i always freeze prior to drinking.

In general theres plenty to eat for those which can afford it,which is the real basic issue at hand. we eat lots of cheap fresh vegetables either raw or cooked after being washed with soap and water with a bit of clorox then rinsed and dried. unless we plan to cook the item as part of a meal just after washing.

the bread fights you mention need to be placed in context,it was government bread which cost from .05 to .10 piasters per piece ( 1 to 2 cents) for the Peta type bread for the general publics home use.what happened was the price of wheat rose for the general public and business operators started to buy truck loads of bread for use in their own shops which also used the same type bread for all the common local dishes sold by sandwich shops.

currently the price of government controlled flour per kilo (2.2Lbs) is 3.5 Le local.the un-controlled price is thirty percent higher or 4.75 Le per kilo at one point the spread was sixty percent and this process took place across all food items.

the super market price of frozen chicken has dropped by almost half its under four dollars for a two pound bird.

cleaned rice is also down by about twenty percent and theres plenty of it

many peoples basic salary could not begin to cover the cost increase
