DHARWAD: In spite of intensifying the awareness campaign and initiating preventive measures, the number of chikungunya cases in the Dharwad district so far has crossed 18,000.
Officials of the District Health Department, 18,342 cases of suspected chikungunya cases had been reported in the district till July 5.

The number of cases is 4,139 in Kundagol taluk and 3,810 in Navalugund taluk.
As many as 2,442 cases have been reported in Hubli city, and 242 in Dharwad city.
As many as 2,389 cases have been reported from Dharwad taluk. Hubli taluk has registered 3,056 cases. In Kalghatgi taluk, 2,264 cases of chikungunya have been reported.
The number of health camps being organised in the twin cities and in the villages of the district have increased of late.

Although there are registered associations of doctors of various systems of medicine that are conducting such camps, there have been several instances of unauthorised practitioners giving medicines for chikungunya.

Since homeopathic medicine has been found to be more effective in treating chikungunya, many quacks are trying to sell what they claim as homeopathic medicine.
M.S. Srikar, Deputy Commissioner, said that the district administration would initiate action against those trying to exploit chikungunya patients.

"We will book those found offering treatment without having the requisite qualification", he told The Hindu . The State Government had permitted the administration of all districts to take the help of qualified homeopaths. Homeopathic treatment would be made available to patients along with the allopathic treatment at the taluk hospitals, he said.
The district administration would be putting into service mobile health units in villages where the incidence of chikungunya was high, he said.

Medicine stock

"We have enough stock of medicines in the district. While the State Government has released Rs. 2 lakh, a sum of Rs. 50,000 has been released through Indian Red Cross Society. Six more fogging machines will be purchased immediately. We will also be intensifying the awareness campaign at the gram panchayats level," Mr. Srikar said.
