November 6, 2009

A 53-year-old south central Kansas woman has died from the H1N1 influenza virus, commonly called swine flu.

The death brings the number of Kansans who have died from H1N1 to 17, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The woman?s infection was confirmed in the KDHE laboratory on Thursday, and her death was reported to KDHE on Monday. The woman had an underlying health condition that placed her at greater risk for severe complications of influenza.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever of 100 degrees or higher, body aches, coughing, sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, diarrhea and vomiting.
