MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - Officials from the Alabama Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that another death due to the H1N1 virus has been confirmed, bringing the statewide total to 17.

ADPH officials said the latest fatality was a man in his 50's from Cherokee County.

Previous deaths of persons positive for H1N1 influenza have occurred during 2009 to residents of Bullock, Calhoun, Dale, Houston, Jackson, Jefferson, Macon, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery, Russell and Talladega counties.

State officials said that when the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, locations, dates and times of clinics will be announced at http://www.adph.org. WAFF 48 News and WAFF.com will also have the latest news about vaccinations in the Tennessee Valley.

This article states that a 7-yr-old had died last month, but I checked and there was an 11-yr-old and an 18-yr-old. This would make the total 18.

Cherokee, Ala., man dies from H1N1

The Alabama Department of Public Health was notified this week about the death of a man in his 50s from Cherokee County, Ala., who tested positive for 2009 H1N1 influenza, also called "swine flu." This brings the total number of deaths of persons with H1N1 influenza in Alabama to 17.

Last month, the Dalton Daily Citizen reported that a 7-year-old girl in Whitfield County died from illness related to swine flu.

The Floyd County Health Department has been administering nasal spray vaccines to toddlers ages 2-4, and local health officials said last week that an injectible version of the vaccine should be readily available by mid-November.
