The Public Health Ministry has reported the 18th swine flu related-death on Sunday.

Dr Nopporn Chuenklin, who heads the public health office in Nakhon Si Thammarat, said the patient was a 19-year-old rubber farmer from Thung Yai district in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

"He also suffered from a complication of leptospirosis," Dr Nopporn said.

Health officials were finding out where and how the victim was infected since he had not visited Bangkok since the A(H1N1) flu outbreak. His family members and neighbouring villagers were also being examined.

Flu claims 17th victim, 209 new cases

The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed the 17th A(H1N1) flu-related fatality together with 209 new infections on Sunday morning.

The latest death was a woman from Ratchaburi province. The ministry believed the 150-kilogram woman, who may have complications, could be infected while she was working at a computer game shop.

The total number of swine flu cases rose to 3,555.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said the ministry will ask cell phone service providers in the country to send SMS messages about the A(H1N1) influenza to their customers.

"There are two million Thais who have congenital diseases and they are are high risk groups. The ministry will send them the information about swine flu via letters and SMS," Dr Witthaya said.

Health ministry reports Thailand's 18th H1N1 death

BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) ? The Ministry of Public Health confirmed Thailand?s 18th death due to the Influenza A (H1N1), a 19-year-old man from the southern province of Krabi, according to Deputy Permanent Secretary Paijit Warachit.

The man was a worker in a rubber plantation in Thungyai district of the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. He died at hospital on Saturday night.

Provincial health official Dr. Nopporn Chuenklin said that health officials were sent to the area he lived and worked to investigate how he contracted the virus.

The governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat convened a meeting Sunday after the new death was reported. Meeting at city hall the participants to discuss preventive measures to contain the spread of the potentially lethal virus.

Workers are scheduled to spray disinfectants in two districts of the province on Monday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday open the country's first H1N1 vaccine laboratory at Silpakorn University. The vaccination pilot plant is expected to be operational in October.

The first two million doses of vaccine were expected to be ready by January at the latest, said the public health minister Witthaya Keawparadai.(TNA)
