DELAWARE, Ohio ? Eighty Buckeye Valley Middle School students missed classes on Monday because of illnesses, while another 90 students were absent from Buckeye Valley High School.
According to the school district, three middle school students claimed that their children tested positive for the H1N1 virus, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.
"I've always taken a very strong stance on being in school," said Superintendent John Schiller. "This is a year that we're going to have to be liberal at taking a parent at their word."
According to Schiller, the district is spraying the inside of its buses to destroy germs.
"I think the custodians are being careful to clean the desks from all the students," Schilling said. "We're doing as much of that as we can."
The district is planning a letter to parents, urging them to remind their students to wash their hands frequently and to keep students home from school if they're suffering flu-like symptoms and then wait 24-hours until the symptoms lapse before returning to class.
Schilling said he wonders whether some parents will keep their children home from school tomorrow for no other reason than fear.
"It's their call in this situation," Schilling said. "Do what's right for your student."
The district is keeping a close eye on staff members and has already talked to neighboring school districts about the availability of substitute bus drivers should the transportation staff start calling off sick, Kocot reported.
