A health official said 96 percent of HFMD fatalities in Vietnam this year have been of children under five years of age.


The death toll for hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has climbed to 81 among 32,588 cases in 52 cities and provinces, according to the Vietnam Administration of Preventive Medicine.

Tran Thanh Duong, the agency's deputy chief, told the Vietnam News Agency that fatalities have been reported in 17 cities and provinces, with Ho Chi Minh City having the highest toll at 22, followed by the provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Long An and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

He added 96 percent of fatalities were of children under five.

HFM patients find treatment expensive

Hand-foot-mouth affected patients are finding it increasingly difficult to pay for the high cost of treatment in hospitals, even though the government has agreed to pay for the basic cost of medicines.

Consequently, district hospitals like the General Hospitals in the southern provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Thap transfer patients in serious condition to Children Hospital No.1 and 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, causing an overload in these city hospitals.

HA NOI – Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien warned parents and teachers yesterday about a likely surge in hand, foot and mouth disease cases as kindergartens opened for the new school year.
