Memphis, TN - 12 year-old Mary Gwendolyn "Gwen" Terry passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009 from complications of H1N1, otherwise known as the swine <NOBR id=itxt_nobr_1_0 style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal; FONT-SIZE: 100%; COLOR: darkgreen">flu</NOBR>.

According to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, Terry had underlying health issues. Terry's obituary mentions she was a graduate of the special education program at Kingsbury Elementary School and attended Shrine School.

Visitation will be 2:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, September 28 at Idlewild Presbyterian Church with services to follow at 4:00 p.m.

The family requests memorials be sent to the Special Education <NOBR id=itxt_nobr_4_0 style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal; FONT-SIZE: 100%; COLOR: darkgreen">Department</NOBR> at Kingsbury Elementary School, UCP of the Mid-South, Shelby Residential and Vocational Services or Idlewild Presbyterian Church.

Canale Funeral Directors is in charge of the funeral.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Officials have confirmed that on Wednesday a 12-year old girl died at LeBonheur due to the H1N1 virus.

The girl we are told had "underlying" factors that may have contributed to the untimely passing.

Le Bonheur Sees Tapering Off In New Numbers

A second child who contracted swine flu has died at Le Bonheur Children?s Medical Center. But the vast majority of the cases coming through the its emergency room do not require hospitalization, according to statistics the hospital released today.

Jennifer Parris, a spokesperson for Le Bonheur, said a girl with underlying health problems died on Wednesday. Her death follows the Sept. 7 death of a 13-year-old boy at the hospital. No other details about the girl were released.

From Aug. 1 to Sept. 23, physicians in the hospital?s emergency department have treated 5,128 children with flu-like symptoms, but only 103 of those have been admitted to the hospital. Of the children admitted, 18 were sick enough to be put in the hospital?s intensive care unit.

So many parents have taken their children to the hospital that Le Bonheur had to set up an air-conditioned triage tent. Hospital physicians have advised parents to first consult with their family doctors when a child becomes sick because most cases of the flu are mild and do not require hospitalization.

In recent days, the volume of patients at Le Bonheur with flu-like symptoms has tapered off. The hospital treated 316 children (45.9 percent with flu symptoms) on Monday, 303 children (48.5 percent with flu symptoms) on Tuesday and 247 (36.4 percent with flu symptoms) on Wednesday.
