12,270 registered cases of influenza in Spain in the last week

12,270 registered cases of influenza in Spain in the last week, compared to end-July 1538 cases of influenza.

A/H1N1 in Spain during the last week have risen to 12,270, according to estimates by the Ministry of Health and Politics Social, compared to 1538 which included the final tally provided by the department of Trinidad Jimenez on July 23. In this way, the total cases registered in Spain since the beginning of the pandemic would exceed 13,000.

According to data supplied by the network of doctors Influenza Surveillance System in Spain, under the new counting system in place since late July, during the week of July 27 to August 2 in Spain could have produced 16,105 clinical cases of influenza, of which 76% were positive for A/H1N1. Therefore, Health estimated the number of cases would be about 12,270.

The new sampling system for sentinel physicians, which the ministry at the end of July under an agreement of the Plenary Council of Interregional SNS to calculate that in Spain the estimated rate of influenza in primary care in the week was 36.04 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Health says that "almost all the cases have evolved positively, with a favorable recovery of the affected people in a few days with conventional treatments."

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the alert for influenza A/H1N1 in April in Spain have been 66 serious cases attended in the ICU, of which half (33 patients) have been discharged ICU discharge and 26 remain in these units with grave prognosis, but stable. Also there have been eight deaths associated with this infection.

The ministry also said that so far the population groups most affected are teenagers and young adults.

Lower rate of infected UNITED KINGDOM OR FRANCE

This week, the rate of infection in Spain is lower than that estimated in the United Kingdom (72 cases per 100,000 population, according to the British Agency for Health Protection), Belgium (66 cases per 100,000 population, according the Scientific Institute of Public Health) and France (48 cases per 100,000 population, according to the Institute for Health Surveillance).

The change in the surveillance system was decided by the full Council of Interregional SNS following the WHO recommendations, the ministry explained, "because in the earlier stages of the disease (at the beginning of the pandemic) was important to identify each case and confirm that the information already available about this new infection was low and each new case brought a lot of information to know about the outbreak of the disease, the risk, associated factors, severity and evolution of the virus, and also because each case detected should be investigated to identify potential contacts and thus limit the spread of infection. "

However, once installed on the stage 6 of the pandemic, in which the virus circulates freely and is not possible to contain its spread, to assess the progress of the disease and measures to be taken, it is only necessary to identify and confirm some cases, what makes Health through the network of doctors. These doctors throughout the country allow their data to see the trend of infection, so it is only necessary to confirm the diagnosis in a sample.

So this reason, health authorities have decided on a Spanish voice and focus surveillance in cases detected through the network of doctors, serious cases and outbreaks in groups of higher risk. The change in the system of counting is just a case of surveillance and does not impede medical treatment and care to all patients, according to clinical criteria.

Re: 12,270 registered cases of influenza in Spain in the last week

Interesting how a new counting system can make such a difference in numbers.

From the WHO:
488 June 15
499 June 17
512 J. 19
522 J. 22
539 J. 24
541 J. 26
541 J. 29
717 July 1
760 J.3
776 J.6 (last WHO update)
1538 July 23 (final tally under the old system)
12,270 July 27-Aug.

Total = 13,808 cases
deaths = 8
CFR = 0.058%

If we applied the same US formula of confirmed to actual (confirmed x 1000? or 10,000?), what would the numbers be for Spain?

Yes, these newer approaches to estimate the true number of cases creates large jumps in numbers, but they a still significant undercounts. The ILI data for the UK for July show 50,000 cases for one week and another 100,000 for teh following week which are well below the 12,000 reported by Spain for one week and 1-2 logs higher than the lab confirmed cases, but there numbers muc=st be quite high because Germany is reporting a large number of lab confirmed cases which are said to be linked to returning vacationers who had just been to the UK or Spain. In The US the CDC has said for some time that the number of cases is well above 1 million, but the number of confirmed cases sugegst the number in the US is almost certainly at least one log higher.

New count system in Spain is a Marx brothers charade.
If they are thinking that a National Sentinel Programm that takes 48 swabs/week for a country of 46.661.950 inhab, they are nuts.

Moreover, Spain is touristic country, every year about 58.000.000 people visit the country, mostly concentrated at Mediterranean an Canary regions on July, August and September months. Top tourisme ranking by region in 2006:

Catalu?a: 15.000.000 -------> 1 flu deaths
Balearic Islands: 10.100.000--> 1 flu deaths
Canary Island: 9.600.000-----> 2 flu deaths
Andalucia: 8.500.000---------> no deaths :applause:
Valencia: 5.500.000----------> 4 flu deaths :oops:

For a 11 deaths country total right now, 8 are in touristic regions.

Look now the busy Spanish Sentinel Net (warning: google translation):
