10th confirmed H1N1 flu case in Taiwan has traveled to China

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) ? The tenth confirmed case of the new A(H1N1) flu case in Taiwan was a 26-year-old Taiwanese male who had a travel history to China and Hong Kong, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced Thursday afternoon. It was suspected to be the first imported case from China or Hong Kong.
The case traveled in China?s southwestern province of Guizhou from May 13 to 22 and returned to Taiwan via Hong Kong last Friday. After arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan Airport early Saturday, he went for a computer training course on Sunday followed by a symptom of high fever emerging the next day, said the CECC spokesman Shih Wen-yi (施文儀).
The case had showed symptoms two and half days after his entry. According to his statement, he did not have contact with any foreigners while he was in China, said Shih.
No one in Taiwan ever having contact with the case developed a symptom afterwards. Thus, it is possibly an imported case, a first from China or Hong Kong, said Shih.
The CECC has retrieved the name list of 17 members in the case?s tour group and 30 people having contact with him after his return. Only the parents and sister of the case are asked to take anti-flu medicine while others are merely advised to take self-health care, said the Center.
Though highly-contagious, evidence showed that the H1N1 flu?s fatality rate is quite low. Therefore, the CECC stopped taking sample from passengers in the same flight with the case since the fourth case was confirmed, and will not give preventive anti-flu medicine to all people having contact with confirmed cases but only high-risked ones, remarked Shih.
Taiwan?s health alert still stays at phase three of the yellow alert for no recorded community infection. Among the ten confirmed cases, case one, two, and five have been discharged from the hospital as the other seven patients are recovering, said the CECC.
As five out of ten confirmed cases are overseas Taiwanese students, the CECC repeated that overseas students should take good care of their health and seek medical attention at once for having flu-like symptoms during the upcoming summer vacation when students usually travel back to Taiwan.
