Uganda is planning to deploy about 100 health workers to West Africa starting in January to help efforts to contain the deadlyEbola virus.

"We are mobilizing a team of about 100; we have about 76 now," Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Asuman Lukwago told The Anadolu Agency in an exclusive interview.

"The technical health workers will go directly to carryout clinical services and care," he explained.

In May, Ugandan Health Minister Elioda Tumwesigye, during a trip to Ghana, committed to a plan to contain the outbreak.

This was followed by a team of 24 health experts who were dispatched to Ebola-hit countries.

Lukwago said deployment of the 100-strong team would be carried out through the African Union, with funding from the WHO, the East African Community and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

"We have decided to be multi-pronged because the cost of maintaining these experts may not be borne by member countries of the African Union, so we have to work through different platforms," he explained.
