One-Third Of Local District?s Students Out Sick Monday
More than a third of the students enrolled in one Central Texas school district stayed home Monday, many of them with flu-like symptoms.


WEST (August 31, 2009)?More than third of the students enrolled in West ISD schools stayed home Monday, many of them with flu-like symptoms.

District officials said 120 of the district?s 325 students were not in class Monday.

Thirty students were absent Monday at West Middle School, alone.

The district sent an e-mail over the weekend, advising parents that several students were being treated for what appeared to be swine flu, although no cases have been confirmed in the district.


The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District said Monday it has received an increase in reports of flu and flu-like illnesses from school districts in the county, but did not release exact numbers.

The Waco ISD said Monday absenteeism is up.

The Temple ISD said it has reports of one confirmed and one probable case of swine flu.

Copperas Cove ISD said it had one confirmed case of swine flu.

U.S. health officials are bracing for a major spike in swine flu with the start of the new school year.
