52 Countries Suspected Animal Infection - tests pending

-- USA

"Scuse me???? Did I miss a posting somewhere??? Somewhere we are testing an animal/bird/critter found on US soil for suspected H5N1 infection? I don't mean surveillance.. I mean, an actual suspected infection?? Please post the citation/article link, please.

Re: 07may06

Yes, the USA *is* on the list...

That's what i am asking... why?? It says "tests pending"...where? WHat animals? WHo found them? WHere is the testing being done?

Last I knew H5N1 High path (the strains associated with the generally regarded 'bird flu" outbreak) had NOT been identified or even suspected yet on US soil...

Am i incorrect? If so, may i have a citation?

Re: 07may06

USA is on the Suspected Animal Infection list because of the reports of Mass Die-Offs of Migratory Birds. These die-offs began with last Fall's migration and have continued with this Spring's migration. Specifically these have occurred in the states of Texas, Louisiana, California, Washington, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Florida and Oregon, to name a few.

NOTE: OREGON excludes those recently diagnosed with Avian Cholera, although that diagnosis is suspect. Despite what the media claimed, my investigations have determined that they WERE NOT tested for Avian Influenza. Avian Cholera is prevalent in ~ 5% of wild migratory ducks/geese that pass through the US, and recent research has disproved the long held belief that all infected birds die due to the swift and lethal nature of the bacteria; asymptomatic cases are in fact common. Avian Cholera shares many of the same Clinical Signs/Symptoms as H5N1 infected birds, such as:

Large die-offs are seen primarily in wild ducks and geese where the disease affects birds peracutely. The sudden appearance of large numbers of dead birds in good body condition with few if any sick birds is observed. Death may be so rapid that birds literally fall out of the sky or die while eating with no previous signs of disease. Sick birds appear lethargic, and when captured may die within minutes. Other signs include convulsions; swimming in circles; throwing the head back between the wings; erratic flight, such as flying upside down or trying to land a foot or more above the water; mucous discharge from the mouth; soiling or matting of the feathers around the vent, eyes, and bill; pasty, fawn-colored or yellow droppings; or blood-stained droppings or nasal discharge.

The necropsy finding of lesions is also the same:

Hemorrhages may be seen on the heart, liver, gizzard, and intestines. Areas of tissue death appear as white or yellow "spots" on the liver and spleen. The liver may appear darkened or copper in color, and may be swollen and rupture when handled. These lesions are indicative of an acute disease process and are not unique to avian cholera infection.

So, these birds certainly could have died from Avian Cholera. However, since these birds could have been asymptomatic Cholera carriers for which antibodies should have been expected in at least 5% of the samples, they should also have been tested for Avian Influenza in an attempt to rule it out. In fact, had they tested for it, they should have found ~5% with low-path AI infections. Absent testing, these birds could very well have been infected with H5N1.

Since nothing prevents these North American Flyway Migratory birds from co-mingling with H5N1 infected birds in their summer breeding grounds in Russia and China, I consider all Migratory bird die-offs to be suspect until tested to the contrary. Despite what you may read, H5N1 testing is very rarely considered in this country, and the tests are even more rarely performed (except for the specific surveillance sampling/testing programs being carried out in Alaska and California).

Yes, H5N1 has not been identified yet in the US. And the fact that it isn't suspected by most is the problem. Migratory Bird Die-Offs will be placed on, and stay on, my Suspected Infection list, regardless of country, until the cause of death can be proved otherwise. I'm waiting on two more replies to my inquiries, at which time the USA will be moved back to the Negative but Probably False column.

Re: 07may06

Thanks, Ghost, for the clarification...I just received via e-mail today the testing guidelines for dead woterfowl reported within my city limits...our suspect testing begins now and is handled through the Texas Parks and Wildlife folk...and they will begin routine surveillance in late August, randomly sampling captured waterfowl, hunter kills, water and feces.
