Zika virus case in Michigan?

DETROIT, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Grosse Pointe Farms woman may be the first in the state to contract Zika virus.

This case has yet to be officially confirmed by any health authority in Michigan, but Donna Sutton says she has been suffering flu-like symptoms for days, after returning home from a trip to Florida.

She says she got bit by a mosquito while on vacation and that doctors and CDC officials believe it may be Zika virus.

A spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Community Health says it would not be surprising if Zika virus showed up in Michigan, especially from someone who recently traveled to Florida.

Michigan resident claims she got Zika in Florida

FORT MYERS, FLa. -- Donna Sutton's vacation in Key West last week took a turn for the worse, when she claims a mosquito bite gave her the Zika virus. "I've got mosquito bites with a rash around it and as you can see my eyes are totally red," she said...

So I called the Michigan Department of Health to verify her claim. By phone a spokesperson with the Department tells me, "No confirmed cases in Michigan. You would have to follow up with her, all I can tell you is there are no confirmed cases in our state."

Sutton says the hospital that initially diagnosed her with Zika last week has since changed its assessment, and now says it doesn't know what has caused her illness.

Health officials confirm first Michigan case of Zika virus

LANSING, Mich. -

Michigan health officials have identified the first confirmed case of Zika virus in the state. The patient is a female resident of Ingham County.

Officials say the woman contracted the virus when traveling in a country where Zika virus is being transmitted. The woman was not pregnant and experienced symptoms shortly after her return to Michigan, authorities say.

?This is the time of year when many Michigan residents are traveling to warmer climates. If you have plans to travel to areas where Zika virus is present, take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. If you are pregnant, or may become pregnant, consider postponing your trip,? says Dr. Eden Wells, chief medical executive at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

State health officials on Wednesday confirmed the first case of Zika virus in a Michigan resident.

An Ingham County female is believed to have contracted the virus during a recent trip to a foreign country. She was not pregnant but experienced Zika symptoms upon her return to the state.

More Michigan travelers showing Zika symptoms

More people flying home through Detroit Metro Airport are showing signs they may have the Zika virus.

Local health departments are working to keep Zika out of Michigan, testing anyone reporting symptoms. New numbers Friday show 59 people in Metro Detroit are having to get tested. So far in Oakland county, 24 people are being tested for the disease and 35 more in Wayne Macomb and Washtenaw counties. Six of those tests have come back negative, the rest are pending.

Experts predict the outbreak to continue to get worse through the summer Olympics in Brazil. There has been one confirmed case of the Zika virus in Michigan - a 61-year-old Lansing area woman, who contracted it during a trip to Barbados and has since recovered.
