Notice to Industry ? Declaration of freedom from Notifiable Avian Influenza for British Columbia
Ottawa June 8, 2015:
Canada has notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that as of June 3, 2015, British Columbia (B.C.) is considered free of notifiable avian influenza. This declaration is based on the successful completion of a three month surveillance period following the eradication of notifiable avian influenza in domestic poultry in the province.
The cooperation of the commercial poultry industry, individual bird owners, the Province of British Columbia and local authorities were instrumental in the disease eradication effort in B.C.
Trading partners who recognized Canadian disease control zones may now choose to resume trade in poultry and poultry products from British Columbia. Canada will work toward the resumption of trade as quickly as possible. Jurisdictions that have restricted trade from all of Canada are expected to keep restrictions in place until Ontario is declared to be free of notifiable avian influenza.
Enhanced active surveillance will continue in order to establish that BC has an equivalent avian influenza status to the remainder of the West, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, with routine surveillance activities for avian influenza in the commercial poultry sector in B.C. resuming in the fall of 2015.
Commercial and backyard bird owners are reminded that good biosecurity practices should be maintained in order to reduce the risk of avian influenza being reintroduced to domestic birds in B.C.

[TD]No new outbreaks of HPAI H5N2 were detected since 19 December 2014 in the province of British Columbia. After the completion of the cleaning and disinfection on 3 March 2015, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has conducted enhanced surveillance in commercial poultry during a three-month period and all results were negative. On 3 June 2015 and in accordance with Article 10.4.3.1 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code, the province of British Columbia has regained its free status in regard with avian influenza. The ongoing Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System is in place in all provinces in Canada.[/TD]
