Michigan health officials monitor worker for Ebola

Michigan Department of Community Health officials would say only the person is ?a health care worker who used appropriate personal protective equipment in one of the countries with widespread Ebola transmission.?
?In order to protect the privacy of the individual, we will not be giving out additional details,? Community Health Department spokeswoman Jennifer Smith said Friday. She would not say where in Michigan the individual is being monitored.

Michigan has ?actively monitored? dozens of people considered at low risk for developing the disease, and so far none have shown any symptoms. Under active monitoring, individuals are allowed to take their own temperatures and stay in touch with health officials by phone. In Michigan, 69 people have completed the 21-day active monitoring period, and another 14 are under active monitoring.
This is the first time Michigan has gone to a higher level, called ?direct active monitoring,? for people at higher risk of developing symptoms.
? ?Direct active monitoring? means that public health officials conduct active monitoring by directly observing the person being monitored,? Smith said. ?This means that a public health official directly observes the individual at least once a day to review symptoms and check temperature; a second follow-up per day can be done by telephone instead of being directly observed.
