Indonesia seeks to hose down Zika fears

Jakarta: Indonesia has sought to hose down fears of the Zika virus sparked by an Australian government travel warning, with the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra issuing a statement stressing the country is not experiencing active virus transmission.
And an expert from the Jakarta-based Ejikman Biological Molecular Institute accused the travel advisory of exaggerating, saying there had only been one confirmed case of Zika in Indonesia. A 27-year-old man was diagnosed when there was an outbreak of dengue fever in the Sumatran province of Jambi between the end of 2014 and April 2015.
The Australian government updated its travel advisory last week, warning Indonesia was "experiencing sporadic transmission of the mosquito-borne Zika virus".

Fairfax Media understands Australia is aware of limited cases of Zika virus in people with recent travel history to Indonesia, including single cases reported in Australia, Taiwan and New Zealand.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has confirmed that Indonesia is not experiencing an endemic local transmission of the Zika virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) in its 15 June 2016 release reported that Indonesia is not among the countries experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015. Please refer to the WHO?s release at http://www.who.int/emergencies/zika-virus/situation-report/16-june-2016/en/
Local and national health authorities together with the community and members of the public throughout Indonesia including Bali have been taking vigorous steps to prevent the spread of the Zika vector (the type of mosquito that can spread Zika).
International travelers in Indonesia, like in many other tropical countries, are exposed to mosquito-borne viruses. We urge holidaymakers to take adequate protection against mosquito bites.
