India probes death of 12 endangered lions

Indian authorities Friday ordered a probe into the deaths of a dozen endangered wild Asiatic lions, half of them cubs, over the last 10 days, officials said.

One lioness died after preying on a poisoned boar while eight others lions died of an infection in the lungs and liver.

Three cubs were killed in infighting while other three passed away in the course of treatment.

"Primarily the deaths appear due to natural causes or some infection," Vijay Chaudhary, forest department official, told AFP.

According to the latest lion count done in 2015, there are 521 Asiatic lions. About 10 of them died in floods in 2016.

The Asiatic lions seem to be in danger, especially after carcasses of 14 lions, including cubs, were found between September 11 and 25 from Gir (east) forest range.

Nine of these were found in the Dalkhaniya range and two were recovered from the Jashadhar range.

Forest department formed 54 teams to screen lions to find out if they are suffering from any disease.

One lioness died during treatment conducted by the team of officials.

Ahmedabad: Two more lions, shifted to a rescue centre during a screening drive in Gujarat's Gir Sanctuary, died Tuesday, taking the death toll to 23 since September 12, an official said.

"Two lions, rescued earlier, died today morning due to infection," said Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Rajiv Kumar Gupta.

Eleven lions had died in the forest due to reasons such as infighting and infections between September 12 and 19, while 10 more died between September 20 and 30 after they were shifted to a rescue centre.

With the latest deaths, the toll of lions that have died since September 12 has reached 23, Gupta said...

Lion deaths: Government begins vaccination of dogs in 20 Gir villages and 33 ?rescued? lions

After the presence of CDV was confirmed in samples of four of the dead lions, the forest and animal husbandry departments had begun vaccinating cattle in villages surrounding the Gir forest.

After the death of 23 Asiatic lions in Gir forest ? some of them tested positive for deadly canine distemper virus (CDV) ? the state forest and animal husbandry departments on Sunday launched a joint operation to vaccinate dogs in 20 villages surrounding Sarasiya Vidi area from where the lion deaths were reported. The forest department has also started vaccinating lions which were rescued from the Shemardi area, adjoining Sarasiya, and are currently under observation.

More Asiatic lions in India test positive for virus after 23 deaths

At least 21 more Asiatic lions, an endangered species found only in India, have tested positive for a highly contagious virus that has been blamed for recent lion deaths.

Tests on samples of 27 Asiatic lions living at the Gir sanctuary in Gujarat showed 21 of them were positive for the Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said in a note dated Tuesday. It was posted on the agency's website on Wednesday.

This follows earlier tests that revealed at least five of 23 lion deaths at Gir over the past three weeks were due to the virus.

"This indicates active disease transmission among the Gir lions," the ICMR said...
