France detects first sexually-transmitted case of Zika virus

Latest update : 2016-02-27

A first case of Zika spread through sexual transmission has been recorded in France after a woman was infected when her partner returned from Brazil, Heath Minister Marisol Touraine told AFP on Saturday.

The case was detected several days ago in "a woman who is not pregnant," the minister told AFP during a visit to French Guiana, confirming information initially given to AFP by a medical source.

The couple lives in the Paris area, the minister's entourage said.

France: first case of sexual transmission of Zika

By RFI Posted on 27-02-2016 Changed at 27-02-2016 at 4:49 p.m.

A first case of transmission of sexually Zika was found in France, announced Saturday a medical source to AFP. Information confirmed by Health Minister Marisol Touraine, traveling in Guyana.

This case of sexual transmission, detected in France a few days ago, "occurred in a woman who is not pregnant. She was infected by her companion, who was returning from Brazil, "said the Minister of Health, interviewed by AFP on this information. Brazil is the country most affected by the outbreak of Zika, with more than 1 5 million people infected.

The couple resides in Ile-de-France, said the entourage of the Minister. The woman "presented very classic signs of the disease," said the minister. "She was not hospitalized and is doing well," she added.

This is the first confirmed case in France of transmitting the virus to a person without being bitten by an Aedes mosquito, vector of the disease.

Exceptional cases of sexual transmission of the virus have been reported in the US earlier and Marisol Touraine had advocated last Sunday condom use for exposed persons.

Pregnant women are particularly monitored because Zika virus is suspected to be responsible for cases of birth defects in infants, including microcephaly (malformation of the skull).
