South Kivu: Difficulties in treating Monkeypox patients

Published on Tue, 08/20/2024 - 2:44 PM | Modified on Tue, 08/20/2024 - 2:44 PM

Hospitals and health centers in South Kivu province are struggling to manage the Monkeypox epidemic, which claimed one victim on Monday, August 19 in the Kalonge health zone at the general referral hospital in Kalehe territory.

The spokesperson for the provincial health division in South Kivu, Claude Bahizire, said that the victim was a twenty-two-year-old man.

The care is not fully assured. The health authorities of the area are requesting the involvement of partners who intervene in South Kivu.

Claude Bahizire asks health zones to take charge of all Monkeypox cases, including suspected cases, free of charge and to bring the samples to the appropriate laboratory in Bukavu.

He asks the sick not to hide away at home, much less to go to prayer rooms. But to go immediately to medical institutions for appropriate care.

According to the medical director of the Kalonge general reference hospital, several people suffering from Monkeypox hesitate and do not want to go for a consultation, highlighting the alibi of the lack of means for care.

Kinshasa: Mpox in rapid progression with 111 suspected cases and 21 confirmed

Thursday, August 22, 2024 - 08:01

The health situation in the city of Kinshasa is increasingly worrying, according to the latest information communicated by Patrician Gongo, provincial Minister of Health.

"The city of Kinshasa is in danger. This disease is evolving rapidly. Yesterday, we had 81 suspected cases and 20 confirmed cases, as well as 2 deaths. Today, we have 111 suspected cases, 21 confirmed cases, and 2 deaths," he said.

The provincial minister urged the population to be vigilant in the face of this rapid development of the Mpox epidemic. "The development of the epidemic is dazzling, let us be careful so as not to be surprised," he added.

Seven health zones in Kinshasa are affected by this epidemic. The health zone of Nsele has recorded three cases, Limete has seven, Kinkole two, Barumbu three, Kasavubu four, and Ngiringiri one case.

Since the beginning of the year, a total of 548 monkeypox-related deaths have been recorded nationwide, with 15,664 potential cases listed. Initial symptoms of Mpox include fever, muscle aches, severe fatigue, and the appearance of a widespread skin rash. Transmission occurs mainly through direct contact with an infected person, via skin lesions or internal mucous membranes such as the mouth, genital and anal region, as well as sexually.

At the national level, the Minister of Public Health, Roger Kamba, assured that the central executive is concentrating its efforts to mobilize the resources necessary to fight the infection. He also announced the imminent arrival of a batch of vaccines.

"We have indeed announced USD 49 million for quite specific needs, but for vaccination alone, we need USD 600 million. The planned USD 49 million therefore does not constitute the total budget. We will intensify our efforts, and we are supported by Africa CDC in the mobilization of resources. Thanks to Africa CDC and the help of the European Union, we have already been able to secure 215,000 doses," said the Minister of Public Health, Samuel Roger Kamba.

Tshopo: 789 cases of Monkeypox and 34 deaths recorded since the beginning of the year

Thursday, August 22, 2024 - 11:58

The situation is serious in the province of Tshopo, says the head of the Information and Communication office of the provincial health division. According to Dr. Philippe Libande, "since the beginning of this year, 789 cases have been recorded and 34 deaths in 19 of the 23 health zones in the province of Tshopo."

The situation is alarming as the number of cases continues to increase. However, the provincial health division is facing several difficulties, including the lack of medicines for the treatment of patients, especially after the fire at the central medicine depot. Added to this are problems of logistics, motivation and training of staff, as well as the lack of financial resources.
...
In Tshopo province, Yahuma territory leads with 227 cases and 6 deaths, followed by Yalibongo with more than 160 cases and 5 deaths, while more than 140 cases have been recorded in Yakusu with 5 deaths. The territories of Basoko, Opala, Yabaondo in Isangi territory, as well as the Bengamisa health zone in Banalia territory are also affected. Even the city of Kisangani is not spared, it is also affected by monkeypox.

At the provincial health division level, an incidence plan has been developed, with the creation of a provincial and multisectoral committee at the health zone level, as well as the opening of treatment centers for monkeypox patients. Currently, the needs are enormous for the care of victims in the affected areas. WHO has just supported the territories of Yahuma, Basoko and the administrative entity of Yanonge with pharmaceutical products, other inputs, and materials necessary to fight this disease.

To combat monkeypox, Dr. Philippe Libande recommends that the population observe barrier measures and hygiene measures. He asks the government to ensure proper care for victims and to make available sufficient quantities of vaccines to combat the spread of monkeypox. In the city of Kisangani, 5 municipalities are affected by this disease: the municipalities of Tshopo, Kisangani, Kabondo, Makiso and Lubunga.

Haut-Uele: Provincial government declares Monkeypox epidemic with already more than 30 suspected cases

Thursday, August 22, 2024 - 3:05 p.m.

The Government of the Haut-Uele province officially announced at the end of a working session with the Health Task Force, this Wednesday, August 21, at the provincial governorate in Isiro, the response measures against the Monkeypox epidemic which has just affected this part of the country.

Since the resurgence of the disease last June in the DRC, the Haut-Uele province has already recorded 33 suspected cases and 1 case tested positive at the laboratory of the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).

Of the suspected cases recorded, 30 have been cured, according to the provincial Minister of Health, Norbert Mandana.
This health authority calls on the population to respect preventive measures to stop the spread of this new epidemic.

"In view of the cases recorded and following certain tests, the samples of which were sent to Kinshasa to the INRB and confirmed, and in view of the current situation, I therefore declare a Monkeypox epidemic in the province of Haut-Uele," said Governor Jean Bakomito.

The provincial authority is therefore asking health services to mobilize to respond effectively to the disease and the population to carefully follow the instructions of health teams to protect themselves.

Mpox in Mbandaka: 72 recoveries, 14 deaths and escape of patients (By Gerry Botelua and ACP Equateur office)

August 23, 2024

72 patients with monkeypox (Mpox) have been cured against 14 deaths in Mbandaka, capital of the Equateur province, in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where cases of escape of patients have been reported, the ACP learned on Friday from a health source.

"Since April, 186 cases have been identified, 98 confirmed cases, 14 deaths recorded and 72 cases cured. Today, 12 patients are admitted to the Mpox treatment center (CTM) at the Wangata general referral hospital," said Dr. Joël Efoloko, chief medical officer of the Wangata health zone in Mbandaka.

The Equateur province has more cases in the DRC with at least 5,858 cases recorded, according to statistics from August 16 consulted.

However, support is still a problem, pending the effectiveness of the response plan put in place by the authorities, it is noted.

“Care remains an unprecedented challenge. For the months of April and May, this care was minimally provided,” said Dr. Efoloko.

"Since the beginning of this month of August, the sick have not received any appropriate treatment," he regretted, to the point that "cases of escape of some sick people have been recorded ," he deplored.

The doctor pleaded for healthcare workers to be provided with "nose masks and disinfectant " and bonuses for the risks taken to treat patients, as occasional interventions by local elected officials are very limited.

A national response plan costing 49 million US dollars was presented to President Félix Tshisekedi on Thursday, restoring hope for a rapid eradication of this epidemic.

Already 6 to 10 million US dollars have been made available by the government of the Republic, according to the Minister of Finance Doudou Fwamba Likunde.

The DRC expects to receive a first batch of more than 200,000 vaccines against the disease next week, before a batch of 3.5 million doses, worth 600 million US dollars, is sent to the country.

Suspected case of monkeypox detected at Boma General Hospital

Published on Fri, 08/23/2024 - 2:29 PM | Modified on Fri, 08/23/2024 - 2:29 PM

A suspected case of monkeypox or monkeypox has just been detected at the Boma general hospital in the Kongo-Central province.

The patient identified is a woman in her twenties, living in the commune of Kalamu.

Dr Serge Thamba, head of the Boma health zone, said the patient had rashes all over her body, one of the symptoms of monkeypox.

While waiting for the laboratory results, he calls on the population to refrain from eating smoked meat and to report any cases presenting with skin rashes.

"It's an alert. By the way, alerts must be investigated before they are confirmed. For the lady we received, we took samples, but already, her rashes are not on the balls of her hands and the soles of her feet. Although she has rashes everywhere, it suggests more chickenpox. But, no matter, we took the samples, we sent the samples, they will confirm for us," explained Dr. Serge Thamba.

He recommends that the population not panic, but rather apply the measures recommended by the response teams:

"It is true that it is a very contagious disease, but the population must remain calm. We have a whole surveillance cell. We are monitoring and the population can send us alerts. All the cases that are at the community level, and with the eruptions, they only have to come, they direct them here to the general hospital. So, we will investigate from here to know if it is monkeypox or not."

Tshopo: at least 27 areas of the Yahuma health zone affected by the Mpox epidemic

Published on Mon, 08/26/2024 - 07:27 | Modified on Mon, 08/26/2024 - 08:31

The chief physician of the Yahuma health zone (Tshopo), Doctor Freddy Lisasi, confirmed on Sunday, August 25, the Monkey pox epidemic in at least 27 areas of the Yahuma health zone, located in the territory of the same name, downstream of the Congo River.

He claims that the epidemic was initially confined to a few localities, then spread rapidly in the region, causing a health emergency.

He said he was worried given the scale and speed of the spread of this epidemic in this health entity, especially since the batch of medicines recently provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) enabled them to provide care to the sick but the challenges are still enormous.

" Significant resources are needed for effective patient care. In particular, medication, means for mobility and, of course, funds for motivating health personnel. Without this, operational capacity is reduced. It will be difficult to treat patients and contain the epidemic ," added Dr Lisasi.

He calls for urgent intervention by health authorities and partners to contain the disease and strengthen the response. But in the meantime, he asks the population to observe hygiene and prevention measures to limit the spread of the disease.

Monkeypox: "More than 30 cases recorded at ex-Mama Yemo in 3 weeks", says Dr Yungu

Published on Mon, 08/26/2024 - 1:39 PM | Modified on Mon, 08/26/2024 - 1:42 PM

The Monkeypox outbreak continues to spread in the city of Kinshasa. Dr Yungu Ukundji, chief physician for Monkeypox at the Kinshasa General Reference Hospital, formerly known as Mama Yemo, revealed that more than 30 cases have been recorded at the facility in the space of three weeks.

“ Since the start of surveillance on August 5, 2024, we have already exceeded 30 cases under treatment ,” Dr. Yungu said in an interview with Radio Okapi.

He stressed that the transmission of this disease, which manifests itself in particular by skin rashes, occurs mainly through sexual contact and direct contact with infected lesions.

In Kinshasa, four sites are currently dedicated to the care of people affected by this disease. These sites include the Kinshasa General Hospital, the Vijana Center and Kinkole.

Dr Yungu Ukundji calls on the population to quickly report any suspected case of Monkeypox to ensure prompt and appropriate treatment.

He answers Etienne Lisumbu's questions:

WHO Director-General's opening remarks at the 74th session of the Regional Committee for Africa
26 August 2024

Dear colleagues and friends,

Good morning, bonjour, it’s an honour to be back in Brazzaville. I would like to join my sister in saying mbote.
-snip-

So far this year, more than 18,000 suspected cases of mpox, with 615 deaths, have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo alone, already exceeding last year’s total, which was itself a record.

Of particular concern is the rapid spread of a new strain of the virus that causes mpox, called clade 1b, in the country’s east.

In the past month, more than 220 cases of clade 1b have also been confirmed in four countries neighbouring DRC which had not reported mpox before: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

Last week, cases of clade 1b were also reported in Sweden and Thailand, in people with a travel history from affected countries in Africa.

But clade 1b is not our only concern. Cases of other clades have also been reported this year in western DRC, as well as in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Nigeria, the Republic of the Congo, and South Africa.

Lomami: 4 suspected cases of Mpox reported (DPS)

Lomami province is now affected by the monkeypox epidemic. Four (4) suspected cases have been reported in Kalambayi and Kalonda East health zones.

These cases were listed in the epidemiological report of the Provincial Health Division (DPS) of Lomami, by the technical services of two affected areas, including the health zone of Kalonda East which has 3 suspected cases as well as that of Kalambayi which recorded one.

In an interview with the press on Friday, August 23, 2024, the head of the Provincial Health Division (DPS) of Lomami, Doctor Jean-Pierre Basala, confirmed the notification of 4 suspected cases of Monkeypox in this province.

"Our province of Lomami has also reported suspected cases of Mpox. Now, we have 4. The last case is in the health zone of Kalambayi where a case was reported, while in that of Kalonda Est, there are 3, whose sample cases have already been sent to Kinshasa," said Dr. Jean-Pierre Bashala, head of the provincial health division of Lomami.

However, he says it is not the Provincial Health Division that declares an epidemic, placing that responsibility on the provincial governor.

"The cases are reported of course, but it is not our service that declares the epidemic. That is rather the prerogative of the provincial governor. He will do it at the appropriate time, with the evidence that we will provide him. Our nurses already have samples sent to Kinshasa," he continues.

Jean-Pierre Basele invites the Lomamian population to respect the barrier measures against this epidemic, which is already spreading in almost all the provinces of the country. He indicates that these are barrier measures similar to those used in the event of the Ebola epidemic.

It should be noted that the monkeypox epidemic is one of the potentially epidemic diseases declared urgently mandatory in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

South Kivu: 290 cases of Mpox patients recorded in Kimbi-Lulenge

August 26, 2024

Kinshasa, August 25, 2024 (ACP).- 290 cases of patients with monkeypox (Mpox) were recorded in the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone, Fizi territory in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, ACP learned on Saturday from a health source.

" Until the day of August 22, 2024, the daily report in my possession indicates 290 cases of Mpox patients in the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone since mid-December with the epicenter, the city of Misisi in the Ngandja sector, Fizi territory. We have four new alerts and four investigated alerts, four validated, one alert collected with 19 patients under treatment, three of whom have already been discharged ," said Mr. Bora Lukanda, chief medical officer of the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone. According to this health authority, all the medical structures in his health zone are currently affected.

Patients presenting signs and symptoms of Mpox in this health zone are referred to the Kilembwe General Reference Hospital for those on this axis, and those on the Kimbi axis are transferred to the Lulimba hospital center.

North Kivu: full care provided for 72 confirmed Mpox cases

Seventy-two cases of monkeypox (Mpox) were confirmed at the end of this week in North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, since the first case was reported on June 1 in the urban health zone of Karisimbi-Goma, where comprehensive patient care is provided. "We have up to this day, at the end of the week that just ended, seventy-two confirmed cases. This is a cumulative number since the first case was reported. With the support of partners, a zonal approach is being advocated by identifying the large hospital structures that are supposed to organize proper complex or holistic medical, nutritional and even psycho-social care," said Dr. Gaston Lubambo, head of the provincial health division in North Kivu.

The head of the provincial health division in North Kivu also mentioned the ongoing mobilization of all necessary resources to strengthen prevention against infections at the community level (PCI).

"The community must be informed about the disease and how to prevent it," he said. He suggested to this effect that, at the level of public establishments, offices and others, there should be preventive measures, emphasizing that the routes of contamination are easy. According to him, a person who is contaminated but unaware of his condition can contaminate as many others, especially since the incubation period of Mpox varies from 5 to 21 days. "Before the obvious symptoms can appear, the person carrying the disease can contaminate as many other people who have been in contact with him," continued Mr. Lubambo.

Kwango: 32 Mpox cases reported in six health zones

The Kwango province, in the southwest of the DRC, has reported, to date, 32 cases of monkeypox (Mpox) in 6 health zones of the provincial health division (DPS) of this province. "The Kwango province has recorded 32 cases since the beginning of 2024, in 6 health zones out of 14 in this province, including 1 death reported in the Panzi health zone," said Apollinaire Yumba Tiabakwau, provincial Minister of Health of Kwango. In addition to the Kenge zone, there are the zones of Mwela-Lembwa, Kitenda, Kasongo-Lunda, Boko and Panzi where one death was recorded.

For his part, the coordinator of the expanded vaccination program, Dr. Léon Makambu pleaded for financial and logistical support to detect cases lingering in the community. "We have already reported 32 cases of Mpox and one death. The Kenge health zone is the top one with 15 cases and the death was recorded in the Panzi health zone. Six out of 14 zones are affected and the rest are silent. The disease is progressing in a crescendo fashion. The management is local and based on the clinical signs that the patients present. But it requires consistent support for regular and ongoing investigation in order to boost especially the health zones that are silent ," said the doctor Coordinating the expanded vaccination program (PEV) in Kwango.

Kinshasa: Awareness of the fight against the Mpox epidemic in a Protestant parish

View of the assembly

The faithful of the International Protestant Parish of Kinshasa, a community of the Church of Christ in Congo, were made aware of the need to respect barrier gestures to protect themselves against the Mpox epidemic, during a Sunday service, at the Protestant Centenary Cathedral, in Kinshasa, capital of the DRC.

"We are bringing to everyone's attention the existence of the Mpox epidemic, called monkey pox, right here in Kinshasa. And we are advised to wash our hands regularly and avoid any contact with people suffering from this disease," said Pastor Alfred Kiboba, one of the leaders of this church.

Pastor Alfred called on every believer to apply themselves seriously in order to protect their family members. To date, there are seven health zones out of 35 that are affected by this epidemic in Kinshasa.

The Limete health zone, more precisely the industrial health area 2, is considered the epicenter of the Mpox or monkeypox epidemic in Kinshasa. The city of Kinshasa recorded during the week of August 12 to 18, 2024, 11 (eleven) confirmed cases of Mpox (monkeypox), who are currently under treatment and interned at the general reference hospital (formerly Mama Yemo hospital).

Bukavu: two new sites to relieve congestion in a hospital overwhelmed by Mpox patients

Two new sites will be operational this week at the Lwiro pediatric center and at the Miti General Hospital, respectively 40 and 23 km north of Bukavu, to relieve the pressure on the Karhanda/Kavumu hospital center in the Miti-Murhesa health zone in South Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which is currently overwhelmed with Mpox cases according to local health sources.

"We have decided to relieve the pressure on the Karhanda/Kavumu hospital (30km north of Bukavu) where there is a high incidence with high attendance of around 150 patients per day and which already reports 1,117 cases of Mpox out of the 4,779 currently in the province," said Dr. Justin Bengehya, epidemiologist and Mpox emergency manager at the health division in South Kivu. This specialist said that during the last visit to this hospital with UNICEF, it was decided to set up a tent at the Lwiro pediatric hospital and another at the Miti general hospital to reduce the spread of the disease from this medical facility.

We are already inviting the inhabitants of the surrounding villages of Lwiro and Miti-centre to refer patients and suspected cases of Mpox for free treatment since medicines have been made available in the Miti-Murhesa health zone, concludes Dr Justin Bengehya.

Haut-Lomami: twenty-one suspected cases of monkeypox including one death

Twenty-one cases of monkeypox (Mpox) causing the death of a man in his fifties are suspected in the Haut-Lomami province in the south-east of the DRC according to the health source.

"Twenty-one suspected cases of monkeypox in the Haut-Lomami province are distributed in the following three health zones: BAKA health zone (Kamina Base)/Kamina territory with three cases; Mulongo health zone/Malemba Nkulu territory with seventeen cases including one death and Kabondo health zone, Kabondo Dianda chiefdom/Bukama territory with one case," reports the report of the Health Information Bureau of the Haut-Lomami Provincial Health Division on the epidemiological situation consulted Sunday by the ACP in Kamina.

According to the report, these twenty-one suspected cases are not yet confirmed positive while waiting for the results of the INRB where samples taken from all these people were sent. "The province of Haut-Lomami has been experiencing psychosis for some time with the appearance of skin rashes on the bodies of some people," indicates the report on the epidemiological situation of the provincial division of Health of Haut-Lomami.

The same source reports that all these suspected cases are being treated in health centers in the three respective health zones. Vaccines and medical equipment required to combat this Mpox epidemic are lacking in Haut-Lomami, we learn from various local hospital environments.

Sud-Ubangi: two new suspected cases of Mpox identified in a health area

Two new suspected cases of Mpox were identified for the very first time in the health area of Nabolo, in Gemena, capital of the province of Sud-Ubangi, (North-West) of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ACP learned on Saturday from a health source.

"Two cases of Mpox disease were suspected for the first time in the Nabolo health area located in the commune of Lac-ndumba in the city of Gemena, who are currently being treated free of charge in accordance with the instructions of the Gemena health zone, because the cases are still mild," said Sangi Bolo, nurse in charge of this health area.

According to him, Five (5) health areas out of 7 health areas in the commune of Lac-Ndumba are affected by suspected cases of Mpox. All 16 health zones in the province of Sud-Ubangi are affected by the Mpox epidemic. According to the latest report from the provincial division of Health (DPS) of Sud-Ubangi, 133 suspected cases have been identified across the province of Sud-Ubangi.

At the WHO media presentation on August 28, 2024 the Health Minister reported

More than 17k cases in the DRC,
The case fatality rate has gone from 4.5% (in 2022) to 7.4%. But due to incomplete testing the current actual cfr may be lower. i.e. if all cases were actually accounted for then the real death rate might be much lower.
The forest area in the DRC is responsible for most of the spread. This is clade II.
Clade 1b is mostly in North Kivu and South Kivu. There was one case in Kinshasa.

DRC: 610 deaths linked to the Mpox epidemic since the beginning of the year

Wednesday, August 28, 2024 - 07:23

The DRC is facing a serious outbreak of mpox, with an increasing number of deaths reported in several provinces. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, presented by Minister Roger Kamba, 35 new deaths were recorded during week 33, bringing the total number of deaths to 610 since the beginning of the year.

During the same period, 1,372 new suspected cases and 206 new confirmed cases were recorded, highlighting the rapid spread of the disease across the country. The case fatality rate is currently 3.4%, a worrying figure for health authorities.

The provinces most affected by the epidemic are located in the west (Équateur, Sud-Ubangi, Maï-Ndombe), the east (Sud-Kivu, Nord-Kivu), the south (Lualaba, Haut-Lomami), the center (Tshuapa, Tshopo, Sankuru, Kasaï) and the north (Mongala, Nord-Ubangi). Despite these alarming figures, Minister Roger Kamba welcomed the improvement in the quality of epidemiological data thanks to the efforts of the response teams on the ground.

The minister also recalled the modes of transmission of mpox, stressing that the disease can spread from one person to another, through direct contact with contaminated objects, or from an animal to a human. He urged the population to strictly follow preventive measures, such as regular hand washing, disinfecting surfaces, and avoiding unprotected contact with wild animals.

“Let us protect ourselves, protect our families and communities, and together we will defeat this disease,” said Roger Kamba. He also encouraged citizens to call the toll-free emergency number 151 to report any suspected cases and to go to health centers for appropriate care, which remains free.

As the start of the school year approaches, the Minister asked parents to strengthen hygiene measures to protect children. He finally thanked all partners and health workers for their commitment and solidarity in the face of this health crisis.

The health minister quoted a much higher cfr today at the WHO meeting. He was suggesting it might be much lower if they knew the actual number of cases to measure against. i.e. A larger base to measure deaths against would result in a lower cfr. The media above got that part wrong unless the official report has a typo in it. Problem is that without adequate testing the situation is murky.

Or maybe the official report does estimate a larger number which brings down the cfr. Hard to know. It's a mess either way.

August 29, 2024

Mbandaka, August 29, 2024 (ACP). – 784 (seven hundred and eighty-four) confirmed cases of Mpox (monkeypox) were reported in the 34th week of the year (August 19 to 25) in the province of Equateur (North-West of the Democratic Republic of Congo), the ACP learned on Thursday from a health source.

" In the 34th week, from January to August, we have recorded 6,157 cases of Mpox, including 784 laboratory-confirmed cases, 334 deaths and 680 recoveries ," said Dr. Teddy Bompolu, in charge of epidemic management planning at the Provincial Health Division (DPS) of Equateur,

" That the population respects hygiene measures which consist of washing hands regularly, not handling the corpse of a person who died of Mpox, not consuming an animal found dead, not greeting each other by shaking hands and going quickly to the nearest health center when a person shows signs of Mpox ," he added.

Dr Bompolu further said that since the start of the epidemic, the Incident Management System (IMS) has been activated to combat this deadly disease.

" We have activated the SGI to fight against Mpox. All 18 health zones are affected by this epidemic, including the city of Mbandaka," he said.

The existence of Mpox in the Equateur province is unknown to many people and requires strong awareness to stop its spread. ACP/CL

Mpox: shortage of medicines deplored in Mbandaka

August 29, 2024

Mbandaka, August 29, 2024 (ACP).- The shortage of medicine stocks was deplored at the Mpox patient treatment center in Mbandaka in the Equateur province, in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, ACP learned Thursday from a health source.

" The conditions in which patients live here at the Mpox treatment centre are difficult. The medicines received from the World Health Organisation (WHO) are exhausted. There is a total breakdown, and patients are buying the medicines themselves," said Brigitte Elema, nurse in charge of the Mpox treatment centre at the Wangata General Referral Hospital in Mbandaka.

" There is a risk of increasing the number of deaths. Some patients are fleeing because of the difficulties because if a patient finds that he is not receiving medication and is not eating, he will only flee. Caritas has provided us with food and non-food and the Provincial Assembly had also donated medicine, but it is already exhausted ," she said.

The head of the Mpox treatment center at Wangata hospital returned to the number of cases of patients that this treatment center received.

" Since April until now we have received 195 patients and recorded 16 deaths. There are patients who have escaped and several have been cured. Currently, here at the center, we have 14 patients in hospital, including 12 confirmed cases and 2 suspected cases, " she said.

However, she pleaded for the supply of medicines to the Mpox treatment center for the care of patients. ACP/ CL

At the WHO media presentation on August 28, 2024 the Health Minister reported

The forest area in the DRC is responsible for most of the spread. This is clade II.
Clade 1b is mostly in North Kivu and South Kivu. There was one case in Kinshasa.

I wanted to correct this information about DRC. The MPOX outbreak in the forested regions centered on Équateur Province is clade Ia, not clade II, which is responsible for the outbreaks in West Africa, South Africa, and elsewhere.

Tshopo: 23 cases of Mpox confirmed among inmates of Kisangani central prison

Posted on Aug. 31, 2024 at 12:09 am

23 cases of monkeypox or Mpox were confirmed this Friday, August 30 in the central prison of the city of Kisangani, Tshopo province. This is what emerged from the Mpox response meeting organized by the team of the provincial health division, doctors from the health zones and partners. This news raises fears of a rapid spread of the disease in this overcrowded prison with precarious sanitary conditions.

According to health authorities, promiscuity and poor hygienic conditions are among the causes of the spread of the disease in this penitentiary establishment, which has a capacity of 500 prisoners, but which today has nearly 1,222 inmates.

Dr Bienvenu Ikomo, head of the Tshopo provincial health division, confirmed the deployment of medical teams to carry out the disinfection of the prison, the screening of other suspected cases as well as the management of confirmed cases.

“At the central prison, there were 87 suspected cases and out of the 87, we have validated 23 cases including a serious case transferred to the epidemic treatment center. The 22 cases are being treated locally at the central prison. This Friday, we went to the central prison after a Mpox response meeting, and we set up intervention teams to strengthen infection prevention and control. We have also set up a care team and a team of psychologists. Investigations and contact screening continue,” he said.

The Tshopo province is among the 5 provinces most affected by monkeypox or Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

North Kivu: a suspected case of Mpox reported at the displaced persons camp in Nyiragongo

September 1, 2024

Goma, September 1 , 2024 (ACP).- A new suspected case of Mpox disease has been reported in the camp called "the hand of God" in the territory of Nyiragongo, East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which quickly alerted the health teams of the response to this monkey pox in order to take care of it, learned the ACP on Saturday from local sources.

" The Mpox epidemic has already invaded the displaced persons in the camps and sites, especially here in the site "The hand of God" where we have just identified a suspected case ," said Mr. Agano Ernest, president of this site for displaced persons by war, while specifying that this suspected case is a child under 10 years old who would have several contacts who are being listed. He said he quickly alerted the health teams of the humanitarian partners of the Congolese government who manage the treatment and isolation site for this disease, located in the facilities of the general reference hospital of Nyiragongo.

" I am directly appealing to humanitarian partners who are working in the health sector to come to our aid and, above all, to urgently recover this infected child ," he added.

The promiscuity in the displaced persons' camps in Nyiragongo territory is the basis for the rapid spread of monkeypox Mpox. Currently, the Nyiragongo health zone is the most affected by this endemic disease, which is transmitted by direct or indirect contact with blood, biological fluids or skin or mucous membrane lesions of infected monkeys or wild rodents.

DRC: In the East, health workers overwhelmed by the monkeypox epidemic

By Africanews Editorial
Last update: 1 hour ago

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, at the Kavumu health center in South Kivu, the situation is alarming. Faced with the monkeypox epidemic, health workers are overwhelmed by the number of patients.

The temporary tents set up to handle the influx of patients are full. Families are forced to settle on the ground, and health workers are overwhelmed by the situation. “The nursing team, the medical team is overwhelmed, so overwhelmed. And you see they are working beyond their physical capacity,” says Dr. Erick Mashimango, the monkeypox focal point at the Kavumu center.

The rapid spread of the disease has prompted health authorities to strengthen their collaboration with the Health Division to curb the outbreak. The demand for vaccines is particularly high. “The affected people themselves are asking for the vaccines. It would be desirable for the vaccines to be given urgently,” says Dr Mashimango.

With more than 20,000 suspected cases and 632 deaths since the beginning of the year, the DRC is facing a health crisis, which prompted the World Health Organization on August 14 to declare the epidemic an international public health emergency.
