Ivermectin - A useful treatment for COVID-19 coronavirus? Some discussion and studies...

This is a recent summary provided on Dr. Kory's website

Summary of the Evidence for Ivermectin in COVID-19

Ivermectin is an anti-parasite medicine whose discovery won the Nobel Prize in 2015 for its impacts in ridding large parts of the globe of parasitic diseases via the distribution of over 3.7 billion doses within public health campaigns since 1987. Since 2012, numerous in-vitro and in-vivo studies began to report highly potent anti-viral effects of ivermectin against a diverse array of viruses including SARS-CoV-2. Further, increasing anti-inflammatory and immuno-modulating effects are being identified. Our comprehensive narrative review of the “totality of the evidence” supporting ivermectin was published in The American Journal of Therapeutics in April, 2021 where we reviewed data on efficacy from a diverse array of scientific sources beyond just the randomized controlled trial evidence as illustrated in the diagram below.

Several television stations have a story today about a Nigerian study that found that Ivermectin causes sterility. Snopes.com discounts that information claiming the study was not published.

I believe I found the study: https://www.scholarsresearchlibrary...tions-of-nigerian-onchocerciasis-patients.pdf

According to the heading it was published in Archives of Applied Science Research. https://www.scholarsresearchlibrary.com/journals/archives-of-applied-science-research/

I found it on the Scholars Research Library website. This site appears to be a membership based resource for scientific journals. https://www.scholarsresearchlibrary.com/

The study also references two other studies with animals.

Can anyone speak to the legitimacy of the Scholars Research Library site and/or to the legitimacy of the research article?

Taking a look. I like that it was published well in advance (2011) of this pandemic so that is not an influence. Not so great is that the authors have not declared any conflicts (or not) of interest....still looking....

I am not impressed with the journal.

It appears that the lead researcher listed, Idonije O.B has not published anything for almost 10 years and I can not find him on the university's site. It also appears Asika E.C has not published since 10 years. Okhiai, O - also about 10 years.

If anyone has any questions about ivermectin, or any other drug/vaccine/treatment, please consult your medical practitioner.

Editor’s note: Following audience concerns over the efficacy and accuracy of the scientific methods used in the ivermectin study performed in Nigeria in 2011, the original publishing station, KTSM, issued the following correction:...

Yet there should be no minimizing the two-step horror of what KFOR-Maddow-Daily News-Rolling Stone and others did in this case: First, they failed to see through a phantom story, likely because it tickled their own preconceptions of life in a red state. And second, when the story was exposed, they tweaked a headline, appended an “update,” added a comment or inserted “context” — all of them cowardly quarter-measures at war with any self-respecting book of journalistic standards.

Journalists like to say that when they’re confronted with their errors, they correct them. Ha.

I see some others were checking. For a study this is what I do:

1) Read it.
2) Form an initial opinion about the probability it is even semi-correct. For example, I have not believed any of the studies saying young children do not spread coronavirus at school when as a mother I know that young children DO spread coronavirus at school.
3) Look at the researchers. I always want to see a conflict of interest declaration. This can be helpful regarding their sources of income. I try to do a cursory check of theiraffiliations. Where are they employed? How long? What other publications do they have? Who have they worked with on their publications? Does their work seem objective? Double blind studies? Is there a general trend of bias regarding their conclusions in their publications? Or not? What references are cited in their paper?

A woman died in a Chicago hospital that wouldn't allow her ivermectin, wouldn't release her to seek care elsewhere, and wouldn't allow a wellness check by friends. (She was reported as estranged from her family.) I wonder if her thyroid meds were changed, (T4/T3 ratio), or dosed incorrectly.

Wolski’s cause of death was pneumonia due to COVID-19 infection with hypothyroidism as a contributing factor, a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office said Monday morning.

For more than a week, her supporters besieged Resurrection with demands that Wolski be given ivermectin.
...

Some COVID patients and their families have sued hospitals when doctors have declined to offer ivermectin. In May, a DuPage County judge ordered Elmhurst Hospital to allow a comatose patient, Nurije Fype, to receive the medication after none of its physicians agreed to administer it.

An outside doctor gave Fype the drugs, and according to social media accounts account run by her daughter, she improved and eventually returned home....

“How Lin Wood and His QAnon Fans Tried to Force a Hospital to Use Ivermectin.”

What??? Force Amita Resurrection to use Ivermectin???

Are you kidding me???

I have and had no idea what medical treatment Veronica Wolski was receiving at Amita. I received a phone call from a friend who represented that she was the lawful holder of Veronica’s Medical Power of Attorney and that she and Veronica were demanding that Veronica be transferred ASAP to another facility for treatment. The word Ivermectin was never mentioned.

I made NO reference to Ivermectin in my call to the hospital. Here is the TRUTH below and unlike Mother Jones and its Mockingbird propaganda flock, the video camera eye does not lie.

Disclosure: I am not using ivermectin and have not asked for it. I have no idea if this drug works on COVID-19, or not.

It seems to me that at the point Ms. Wolski was diagnosed with a terminal situation there was an argument that she be given the choice to take ivermectin under the Right to Try Act:

The Right to Try Act, or the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn, and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act, was signed into law May 30, 2018. This law is another way for patients who have been diagnosed with life-threatening diseases or conditions who have tried all approved treatment options and who are unable to participate in a clinical trial to access certain unapproved treatments.

I do not know who the CDC Health Alert Network are but I do not think they have anything to do with 'The CDC', they seem to be a pro-Ivermectin lobby.
[EDIT] I dug a little deeper and the CDC Health Alert Network is part of the CDC but I can not see how it can be referenced as pro Ivermectin given the text says
"Ivermectin is not authorized or approved by FDA for prevention or treatment of COVID-19. The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel has also determined that there are currently insufficient data to recommend ivermectin for treatment of COVID-19."

The Indian COVID kit is unfortunate as Ivermectin has yet to be shown to be effective and Doxycycline is an antibiotic which will not impact the virus but may well lead to resistance.

I am so "over it" with the US health departments. They all disagree with each other in varying degrees. The mask fiasco is one example. This is why this site recommendation is to consult with your medical practitioner.

As to the India situation - I really like John Campbell but these outbreaks run in waves and the India wave was hitting a downturn when the kits were distributed anyway. I am not sure there is any correlation between the wave downturn and some of the contents of the kits. Overall the kits are probably better than nothing since they include masks and an oximeter. Time will tell as the pandemic is not over.

I would personally love it if any of the known and inexpensive drugs already available were a safe and effective alternative to a vaccine. I am just not convinced. I have not asked for ivermectin or hydroxy. I know that pandemics take a few years to run the cycle. I am not comfortable with taking either long term at this point. I am also not thrilled with two vaccine shots a year - for how long? A couple more years?

If I sound frustrated it is because I am. Since I am high risk I have restricted my outings for more than a year. I was not happy to take the first rounds of vaccine and now I am trying to decide on the booster. Moderna is not approved yet for use as a booster so I have time to consider this. I am not happy about the available drugs either. Masks give some level of protection so I use them. I think as a high risk person I am fairly screwed for the next year at least. I just have to accept this - as irritating as it is.

I know many people are just living as usual. And that is their choice. It is not mine. I respect other people's choices and I hope people respect mine.

Ivermectin: How false science created a Covid 'miracle' drug

Ivermectin has been called a Covid "miracle" drug, championed by vaccine opponents, and recommended by health authorities in some countries. But the BBC can reveal there are serious errors in a number of key studies that the drug's promoters rely on.

For some years ivermectin has been a vital anti-parasitic medicine used to treat humans and animals.

But during the pandemic there has been a clamour from some proponents for using the drug for something else - to fight Covid and prevent deaths.

The health authorities in the US, UK and EU have found there is insufficient evidence for using the drug against Covid, but thousands of supporters, many of them anti-vaccine activists, have continued to vigorously campaign for its use...

Dr. Campbell weighs in on this article. I agree 100% with his comment that he is greedy - he wants both effective vaccines and great treatment options. I do not know why the mantra culture to trying to make us choose? Why can't we have both?

Man whose wife won a court battle to treat his COVID-19 with ivermectin has died

Mike Argento, York Daily Record
Tue, December 14, 2021, 9:06 AM·7 min read

Keith Smith, whose wife had gone to court to have his COVID-19 infection treated with ivermectin, died Sunday evening, a week after he received his first dose of the controversial drug.
He was 52.
Smith had been in UMPC Memorial for nearly three weeks and had been in the hospital’s intensive care unit in a medically induced coma on a ventilator since Nov. 21. He had been diagnosed with the virus on Nov. 10.

...

She had kind words for the nurses at UPMC, writing “I still love you.” She wrote, “You cared for Keith for over 21 days. You dosed him with the medicines the doctors prescribed. You cleaned him and groomed him, moved him, propped him up, dealt with every mess, every smell, every trial. Everything. I appreciate you.

“That’s all I’ll say about UPMC at this time,” she wrote. “You’re incredibly lucky to have the nurses you do, jackwads. Treat them better.”

...

She described his last moments.

“The nurses removed that cursed tube from his throat and he breathed on his own for a bit,” she wrote. “Then, slowly, the time between breaths lengthened. His heart hammered in his chest. Such a strong, valiant heart. Finally his pulse went to zero, his color paled immediately.

“The man in that bed did not look like Keith. He was gaunt, with scabs on his cheeks from three weeks of torture, having that godforsaken vent attached to his face. He had a full beard and mustache. His hair had grown like a wild man.”
...
An engineer, a Penn State fan and a Christian
Keith Smith was a structural engineer, a vice president of a firm headquartered in Lancaster. He was a graduate of Penn State and was an avid fan of the Nittany Lions football team. He was active, his wife said, and enjoyed woodworking and skiing...
...
She wrote, “I don’t want to remember my husband in that awful bed with that monstrous tube stuck in his throat. I want to erase the IVs, the wires, the lines, the feeding tube. I want to erase all of this.”

She wrote that she had picked up a prescription for ivermectin the day before Thanksgiving. “I could have given him the drug on the sly. Yes, they would have caught me.” She described preparing the drug in a sterilized Rubbermaid cup to sneak it into the hospital before the court ruled on her lawsuit. “In the end, I didn't do it,” she wrote. “And that will forever be a cloak of guilt that will cover me in shame.”

Instead, she wrote, “I waited for the stupid court order, a nine-day delay from the date I picked up the script in Paoli. Then, UPMC played nasty, vile, wicked games for two days and delayed further.”

She wrote, “The only thing keeping me upright is sheer hate and venom. Don't lecture me - DO NOT. If you've been through this, you know precisely what this feels like. I hope it is momentary, but I'm pretty nasty when cornered, so don't hold your breath. And, if you haven't been through this, drop to your knees and thank GOD that He hasn't dumped this on you. Thank your lucky freaking stars. But do NOT, ever, lecture me or judge me. There but for God's grace go you. Trust me, you do not want this burden.”

She concluded, “My heart will always have a Keith-sized hole in it. It will never go away. I will miss him until the day I expire.”

Weaponizing the State: Does NH DCYF Have a “Bitter Clingers” Problem?

by Jim Kofalt / 20 December 2021
The New Hampshire Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) recently made some waves in our state when they attempted to remove two children from their home after learning that the father had administered Ivermectin to his teenage boy a few days earlier.

The facts of the case paint a disturbing picture of authorities who simply don’t respect their limits. There was clearly no ill intent and no meaningful risk to the child. Ivermectin is a safe FDA-approved medication with relatively minor potential side effects. It’s available over the counter in much of the world, and in fact, many medications that are readily available at your local grocery store are arguably far more dangerous, including acetaminophen, cough syrup, and even Epsom salts.

Yet New Hampshire DCYF saw fit to issue a protective order, deploy their agents, and issue a “be on the lookout” notice to local police departments. They were willing to put the family, – including two young teenagers, – through the trauma of forcible separation and placement with strangers for an undetermined period.

Fortunately, the parents quickly figured out what was going on; they were able to move the children to a safe location before DCYF could get to them. Legal proceedings are now underway. But there is much more to this story, and it has everything to do with who DCYF was dealing with.

Related: DCYF Threatened to Take RebuildNH Co-founder Jr Hoell’s Children after He Reported Treating Them with Ivermectin

The father in this case happens to be a former New Hampshire state legislator. He’s the co-founder of a group called ReOpenNH, which has spearheaded the fight against mask requirements, forced business closures, and vaccine mandates for most of the past two years...
