Bird flu in dead swans in Harderwijk - NOT

14-12-17

A high pathogenic strain of bird flu was found among the dead swans along the coast of Harderwijk. This was confirmed by Dani?lle Cardozo, spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

It is the same virus - H5N6 - that was confirmed last week at the duck farm in Biddinghuizen. Last week, seventeen dead swans were found along the coast of Harderwijk. It was noticeably more than in previous years and it was initially a mystery what killed the birds.

According to the ministry, the virus has so far not been found in other wild birds in the Netherlands.

The virus is very contagious and deadly for birds. In principle, it is not dangerous for people.

Note: the affected duck farm in Biddinghuizen, is about 11 miles (18 km) from Harderwijk.

Via Twitter a correction from an avian flu specialist: media were wrong to report bird flu in swans in Harderwijk . H5N6 was detected in other wild birds, see OIE-report. (post #2 and #3) .

HP H5N6 bird flu in wild birds in Nunspeet and Elburg

NUNSPEET - Bird flu has been found in two more places in our province. This time in wild birds that are found in Hulshorst (municipality of Nunspeet) and Elburg. The dead animals have been tested positive for the disease by Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR).

It is not clear which birds are involved. It is also unknown how many animals are infected.

All birds infected with avian influenza carried the same strain of the virus that was detected last week on a farm in Biddinghuizen. It is the highly pathogenic strain.
