The number of deaths from swine flu in Mumbai has risen to 11 this year. Three people were killed by the H1N1 virus between June 7 and 13. Doctors said that it was crucial to start treatment early if one shows symptoms of H1N1 infection.

There have been 211 cases of swine flu reported so far this year, compared to just two cases last year. No swine flu deaths were reported in the city in all of 2016.

Swine Flu, which raises the head in the summer in some parts of the eastern Vidarbha, has kept the outbreak in the recent rainy season. Health department has registered three more deaths on Thursday and the number of people suffering from the disease in the last six months has now reached 34.
Baby Chopde (63) Ra. The old Babulkheda, Vikasnagar, Nagpur and two others have named the patients who have died due to this disease. Chopade has been in Nagpur for the last few days and two other patients were also being treated at other hospitals in the city. In their investigation report they came forward to be sick.

Mumbai: The H1N1 influenza virus which entered the list of infectious diseases with a global pandemic in 2009, has overtaken dengue and malaria to become the biggest killer among seasonal ailments in Maharashtra.
Since its appearance, the viral infection has claimed nearly 2,500 lives in the state, about five times the fatalities caused by dengue and three times that of malaria in the same period. The viral infection is now next only to tuberculosis and AIDS in the state's list of top contagious killer diseases. TB and AIDS together are responsible for more than 10,000 deaths in the state annually.
While annual death toll of dengue and malaria have reduced to double digits over the years, H1N1, initially called swine flu, has managed to spring a surprise almost every alternate year, killing hundreds. In the first half of 2017 alone, 247 people died of the airborne disease in Maharashtra, including 10 in Mumbai. Three deaths occurred in the last week, two of the victims being a pregnant woman and another a TB patient.

Dr Pradip Awate, the state?s surveillance officer, said two-thirds of H1N1 victims this year were people with diabetes or hypertension, or both.
?Of the 261 patients who died, 57% of them had hypertension and/or diabetes. Others had conditions like myeloma (cancer), liver and kidney problems.? he said. All the people who have died were between 25 and 45 years, he said.

That's at odds with Dr Awate's statement from June 15th;

State epidemiologist Dr Pradeep Awate said the percentage of deaths among senior citizens has reduced as compared to previous years. "Over 67% deaths have been in the 21-50 bracket. Six out of the 10 deceased had some or the other health problems. We had about 15-20 deaths in people above 60," said Awate. He said that deaths among pregnant women too have been brought under control. "It's less than 10 this year," he added.

Pune: Two people died due to swine flu in the city. The health department has informed that this disease has killed 62 patients so far.

Patients of Lohagaon and Karmala (District Solapur) died while they were undergoing treatment in Pune's Swine Flu. Due to monsoon, there has been a positive environment for swine flu virus, which has increased the number of swine flu patients, Health Department officials said.

Seven of the swine flu patients have been put on ventilator for treatment, while three patients have been admitted to different hospitals in the city. Since January 1, 314 people in the city have swine flu. Swine flu is fully cured due to early diagnosis, proper treatment and regular medication. So far [1,]243 patients have been successfully treated, officials said.

Two more fall prey to H1N1; Death toll rises to 61 in Pune

On Sunday, two men fall prey to swine flu thereby increasing the death count of swine flu deaths to 61 so far. Both of them did not suffer any major illness and did not possess any co-morbid conditions. Doctors say that people dying, though not suffering any major illness, is a matter of concern and it is because of delay in taking Tamiflu tablets. They say it is the responsibility of an individual to get vaccinated.

On Sunday, two men succumbed after they were tested positive for swine flu. A 51-year-old man from Karmala, Solapur district and a 35-year-old man from Lohgaon in Pune did not have any co-morbid conditions, but still they fell prey to swine flu.

While the state health department is targeting on people with major illness for vaccination against swine flu, these two cases reported by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) did not show any major illness like diabetes, cancer, hyper tension etc.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that between January and June, 490 cases of H1N1 have been reported across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and nearby areas. Of these 383 patients were residents of Mumbai. Of those affected 56 percent patients were male and the most number of patients were in the age group of 15-44 years.

Of them, 28 patients are taking treatment in the department of hypertension. So 6 lakh 13 thousand 206 patients have been examined in various hospitals of this year. To reduce the swine flu, the municipal corporation has undertaken a campaign of public awareness. However, NMC has failed to take control of the swine flu.

After Malti Nag, who lived in Borivli?s Yogi Nagar area, died of the disease, a team of doctors survey the building she lived in. ?We have been advised to enter the house only after conducting a pest control operation. This is quite strange because she kept the house absolutely clean and we had also whitewashed the flat last month,? said Suryanath Nag, 46, Malti?s husband.

Two more swine flu deaths; toll touches 64 [in Pune District]

So far, out of 64, 19 victims of swine flu have been from the city whereas 45 have been from out of Pune city limits.

Pune: A 61-year-old woman from Satara and a 37-year-old man from Latur district succumbed to swine flu taking the city death toll to 64.

The woman, a resident of Satara, had sent her swab sample to the National Institute of Virology on June 14. She tested positive on June 15 and lost the battle for her life at 1:50 am on Saturday.

The man, a resident of Dongargaon from Latur district, tested positive for swine flu on June 18. He succumbed to his condition on Friday at 2:45 pm.

MUMBAI: Every fifth person who underwent a test for influenza H1N1since April in the city has tested positive for the virus. The wide footprint of swine flu becomes clearer given that only a fraction of H1N1 patients -those hospitalized or belonging to the high-risk groups -are being tested according to the government protocol.

Health experts say H1N1 has been the most dominant influenza type this monsoon.

Data compiled by the BMC showed that of the 2,603 people tested for the infection since April, 484 were positive. Maharashtra, including Mumbai, recorded 284 deaths and 2,324 cases this year, and continues to be one of the worst-affected states. The city has had nearly 500 confirmed cases and nine deaths so far.

Interestingly, the positivity rates seem to differ between public and government testing laboratories. In the public laboratories such as Kasturba and Haffkine Institute, the positivity rate is higher at around 23%. The rate drops significantly to 17% in the private laboratories. Currently, 11laboratories and private hospitals in the city are permitted to carry out H1N1tests.
