About 2,700 firefighters participated in the annual event held near Tokyo Big Sight exhibition hall. In addition to modern displays, performers of traditional firefighters' acrobatic ladder-climbing, dating back to the Edo period, flew banners with messages of encouragement for the Tohoku region.

Conveying the true feelings of disaster victims
Six months have passed since I moved from Tokyo to begin reporting from the Sanriku Coast in Iwate Prefecture, an area devastated by the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Each day I notice the feelings of people affected by the disasters -- the sadness of losing a loved one, the feeling of self-condemnation for surviving while others have died, and worries about the future. During my time here, I've also been taught the importance of time spent with family and friends -- things that I had taken for granted.
