Alert as pigeons fall prey to flu

OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Mithilesh Kumar
Bokaro civil surgeon Mithilesh Kumar on Thursday called upon the public to be careful and alert the district administration should they come upon any dead birds.

Kumar said the avian flu virus H5N1, which was first detected in crows, appeared to have spread among pigeons as well in the last three days, as many as six birds of the latter variety had been found dead in Bokaro and Chas township.

He added that it was feared that this disease could be transmitted to cats and pigs, as the stray animals feed from the same place as scavenger birds.

In a bid to stop the spread of the virus, Kumar called for careful disposal of carcasses. People were advised to use plastic or rubber gloves while disposing the dead birds, and the carcasses had to be buried at least a metre below the ground after being covered in lime. The civil surgeon also asked people to get in touch with the district animal husbandry officer Dr Krishna Chowdhury at 9431315952 should they find any dead birds.

NCDC team advises health officials how to fight H5N1 virus
The writer has posted comments on this articleTNN | Dec 24, 2011, 10.09PM

JAMSHEDPUR: A four-member team from the National Communicable Disease Centre (NCDC) Delhi on Saturday trained health officials on how human and poultry products could be protected from contagious disease with research reports concluding that H5N1 virus was behind the abnormal rise in the death of crows in the Steel City.

The team, which was led by director Vina Mittal, arrived here on Friday. It chaired a meeting at the district civil surgeon's office on Saturday. In the light of humans and poultry products potentially susceptible to the H5N1 disease, the NCDC members trained the health officials on how to protect them from the disease.

...

In its findings, the National Institute of Virology Pune last month concluded that the virus killing the crows was similar to Hubei like H5N1, which is currently circulating in Southeast Asia, including neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar and China.

District flunks crow death test
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Jamshedpur, Dec. 24: A central team of experts has directed the East Singhbhum administration to launch a massive offensive to check crow deaths and protect other avian species, giving a poor score to district health officials for failing to create awareness among people.

During a review meeting with the district administration, the five-member team led by additional-director of the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) Veena Mittal did not hide its dissatisfaction regarding steps taken up under the integrated diseases surveillance programme since the past two months.

Instances of crow dropping dead started occurring with alarming regularity in October this year.

?The surveillance work of the health department needs to be further strengthened in the city, especially as it has been singed by viral attacks one after another. The district surveillance programme unfortunately does not even a plan to tackle any such epidemic,? a district official who attended the review quoted the team as saying.

...

?The workshop, pamphlets and training will be in the form of dos and don?ts regarding crow deaths. It will basically pertain to the correct methods of using kits and handling crows carcasses. The surveillance unit has been asked to procure 100 special kits comprising gloves, masks and other tools,? said ADM Vijay Kumar Singh.

...

The team also said crow deaths had assumed epidemic proportions across Santhal Pargana, even though the first cases were reported in East Singhbhum. The experts added that a majority of the deaths had occurred in Kolhan.
Citing findings of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly and Bhopal, they ruled out the possibility of the viral strains affected other avian species, besides crows.

Mass awareness drive about bird flu
Posted about 15 hours ago | 0 comment
Governments now plan to put up hoardings at public places to educate the people about how to avoid carelessness and dispose the carcass
of dead crows to prevent the spread of the avian virus. Human beings and birds specially poultry are said to be most vulnerable though it
may effect the other birds and dogs as well. It would also train personnel from the urban bodies and the district Surveillance officer who
would then educate the panchayat personnel and other people at local level.

Crow deaths have assumed epidemic proportions in some parts of the state like Santhal Parganas and kolhan though they are being reported
from the other parts of the state as well. At some places like Chatra which faces chronic poverty and food scarcity, some children have
been reported to have cooked and eaten up the dead crows.
The germs of the flu are said to die at temperatures at or above 70 degree
Celsius. However, it is highly unhealthy and risky to eat a diseased crow and the children could get infected when handling the carcass.

?New bird flu strain killed Jharkhand crows?

Anuradha Mascarenhas : Pune, Tue Jan 17 2012, 03:31 hrs

Scientists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) have found a new strain of bird flu that killed over 500 crows three months ago at Jharkhand.

While confirming that it was avian influenza, Dr A C Mishra, the Director of NIV, said that the strain is different from the one that had infected poultry in Maharashtra some years ago. It is for the first time that it has been found in the country, Mishra said. ?We have compared it to the strains from Vietnam, Indonesia and other places in Asia and found similarities with the Vietnam strain,? added Mishra.

The NIV had received samples that included four crows from among those that had died in several areas of Jharkhand, including Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Hazaribagh. The process of characterisation of the virus is underway and it is a different strain of the avian influenza virus, NIV scientists said.

The strain belongs to Clade 2.3.2.1 while the H5N1 strain that was reported in the country in 2006 belonged to Clade 2.2. A...
