Re: The situation in India, an Overview.

During the week from February 13th to 19th, 1,284 samples were taken of which 184 (14.3%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 29,452). This represents a significant reduction in total positives and a slight reduction in % positive from last week. Maharashtra (102) alone accounts for 55% of all new cases. 30 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,361. Maharashtra?s death rate dropped. Gujarat recorded only 27 new cases, but had 12 confirmed fatalities. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases for selected states are at the bottom of this report. The overall trend of infection is generally downward.

The India database now contains information on 1,441 confirmed and suspected cases. This week, 19 individuals without any identifying information other than State were added to the Consolidated status fatality list. Given the lack of detail, it is inevitable that double counts could exist in the above numbers where a media report may show a death in one State, that was recorded centrally as a death of a resident of a different State.

During the period from April 2nd to April 15th (no report yet available for Apr 16), 935 samples were taken of which 191 (20.4%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 30,410). Nationally, only 16 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1476. Reporting has been spotty this week with no national updates provided for Apr 13th, nor any for the past 72 hours. Maharashtra has not updated its website since Apr 8th, and has missed the national reporting deadline several times this week. I spent some of this week going through the database checking data, removing errors and adding some previously unidentified fatalities, my total is currently 1,508. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

Re: The situation in India, an Overview.

During the period from May 14th to May 24th 401 samples were taken of which 52 (13.0%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 31,904). India has transitioned from daily to weekly reporting. The reporting week is Tuesday to Monday, with reports released on Tuesdays. To accommodate this change, I have truncated the period covered in this report from the usual two weeks to 11 days. Nationally, 11 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1,527 (my current total is 1,559). The general trend of positive cases is downward. New cases and fatalities in Maharashtra are showing a long awaited reduction. In my report of May 2nd, I indicated a rise in cases from Karnataka, this has since decreased, but this week the state added a further 7 fatalities with no other details than that they occurred prior to May 17th. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

Re: The situation in India, an Overview.

During the period from May 25th to June 7th 386 samples were taken of which 77 (19.9%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 31,981). This is the highest % positive since the beginning of April. Nationally, 17 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1,544 (my current total is 1,576). Maharashtra and Karnataka continue to have confirmed cases and fatalities, but a new significant outbreak is occurring in Kerala. This new wave of H1N1 is part of a larger general increase in viral diseases in Kerala and seems to be at least as significant as the October wave. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases using data from Consolidated Status updates for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

Re: The situation in India, an Overview.

During the period from June 8th to June 21st 1,441 samples were taken of which 477 (33.1%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 32,458). This is the highest % positive since the beginning of January. Nationally, 24 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1,568 (my current total is 1,600). There have now been 24 fatalities in Kerala since May 31st, exceeding the October/November wave. Moderate increases in positive cases have also been observed in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi. One suspect fatality is awaiting confirmation from Tamil Nadu. It is possible that we are observing the beginning of a significant monsoon wave in India spreading Northwards from Kerala. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases using data from Consolidated Status updates for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

Re: The situation in India, an Overview.

During the period from June 21st to July 4th 2,751 samples were taken of which 995 (36.1%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 33,453). This is the highest % positive since the beginning of January. Nationally, 35 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1,603 (my current total is 1,635). There have now been 42 fatalities in Kerala since May 14, double the October/November wave. The number of confirmed cases has increased significantly across southern India – Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well as Maharashtra. During this two week period, fatalities were also reported from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi. This wave continues to grow and spread outward from Kerala. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases using data from Consolidated Status updates for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

Re: The situation in India, an Overview.

During the period from July 5th to July 18th 2,617 samples were taken of which 662 (25.3%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 34,115). These numbers are all down from the last report mostly due to a data dump by Gujarat on June 27. Nationally, 56 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1,658 (my current total is 1,691). There have now been 58 fatalities in Kerala since May 14, compared to 37 in the October/November wave. The number of positive cases dropped in Kerala for the second week running, however the number of confirmed cases has increased significantly in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and most worryingly Maharashtra. During this two week period, fatalities were also reported from Gujarat and Delhi. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases using data from Consolidated Status updates for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

During the week from July 19th to July 25th 1,827 samples were taken of which 554 (30.3%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 34,669). Nationally, 48 fatalities were registered bringing the official total to 1,706 (my current total is 1,739). The number of positively identified cases from the Southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala diminished, but cases elsewhere are rising, most notably in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and West Bengal. 24 fatalities were recorded in Maharashtra. The largest single week toll for that state was 25 recorded in the week ending September 18 2009.
