Four new swine flu cases among medical students

BHAVNAGAR: Four more students at Government Medical College (GMC), Bhavnagar, tested positive for swine flu on Saturday, creating panic in the hospital campus. On Friday, three students had tested positive for the dreaded H1N1 virus.
Hospital and hostel authorities have confirmed seven positive cases, but are not ready to divulge details. However, dean Dr Parmar said only one more positive case was reported on Saturday. Bhavnagar University declared Diwali vacation from Saturday.
Authorities had ordered all the 140 hostelites in the government college hostel on Jail Road not to leave the hostel. Six students were locked up in one room. Not following the dictate, some fled by jumping over the wall. In some cases, parents reached the city and took their wards away.
"Two students who had tested positive were being kept in the hostel. So, panic spread among the other 60-odd hostelites there," said a parent who has taken his daughter away.
Meanwhile, principal health secretary of the state Ravi Saxena said in Ahmedabad that authorities are not stopping any undergraduate student, who is asymptomatic, from leaving. He also said the process was being streamlined.
Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) health officer Dr BS Sinha said, "Those who have shown signs of swine flu can't be let out as they will spread the disease. At present, there are seven H1N1 positive cases and about 10 suspected cases at the college."
Collector of Bhavnagar Pradip Shah said, "We have allowed students not suspected of having swine flu to go home. To my knowledge, only one positive case of a postgraduate student in the orthopaedic branch was reported today."

Rourkela (Orissa), Oct 12 (PTI) A doctor from Jharkhand working with SAIL was today tested positive for swine flu here.
Anup Kumar Bansal (45) of neighbouring Jharkhand, was admitted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) here on Thursday with complaint of high fever, hospital official said.
His throat swab and blood samples were sent to Kolkata for test and was subsequently found H1N1 positive, they said.
Bansal is being kept on ventilator in the isolated intensive care unit (ICU), where his condition is stated to be critical, they said.
He was working as an ENT specialist in Kiriburu mines under Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).

ROURKELA: A doctor enployed with SAIL tested positive for swine flu on Monday. A K Banwar, a doctor posted at SAIL's Kiriburu mines hospital, was
admitted to IGH here with severe respiratory problems on Thursday afternoon.
Suspecting swine flu, doctors sent his swab samples to Kolkata. The report came back positive on Monday. "We have kept him in isolation in the ICU and administered the necessary medicines," IGH deputy director S Mishra said. "We have also advised his wife, who is also a doctor at the same hospital, to take preventive drugs," Mishra added.
Banwar, who hails from Jharkhand, had gone to Jamshedpur during Durga Puja. He is suspected to have come in contact with an infected person during his stay at Jamshedpur.

CHANDIGARH: A 23-year-old doctor of PGI tested positive for swine flu on Sunday. The doctor is the colleague of the junior resident doctor from
department of psychiatry who had tested positive two days ago for the virus. Besides, one suspected patient, 40-year-old woman from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, was admitted to PGI, with symptoms of the disease.

PUDUCHERRY: A medical student of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research tested positive for A (H1N1) influenza on Wednesday. He has been admitted to Government Hospital for Chest Diseases, Gorimedu, for observation, according to officials of the Health Department.

Chandigarh, Oct 17 - A senior doctor at a leading hospital here has tested positive for the influenza A - virus, a health official said Saturday.
He is among the dozens of doctors and other medical staff here who have contracted swine flu.
'The patient is a resident doctor of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research -. He was exhibiting symptoms of swine flu like running nose, high fever and bad throat. We had collected his throat and nasal swab samples Thursday and his report has come positive,' a health official said.
'His condition is stable and he is responding well to treatment. Due to the nature of work, doctors and other hospital staff have become more prone to infection. We instructed them to follow all the precautionary measures and to remain extra cautious,' he said.
Till now, nearly 250 suspected cases of swine flu have been reported in Chandigarh hospitals, of which over 40 have proved positive. One casualty has been reported till now.
In Chandigarh, testing facility of this virus is available at the virology department of PGIMER, which is catering to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
Quarantined wards for the treatment of swine flu have been established at PGIMER, Government Medical College and Hospital and Government Hospital.

Puducherry: Five MBBS students of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here have tested positive for H1NI influenza.
Sources said the swab and blood samples of the five students were tested in the last two days and were found to be positive.
They have been given Tamiflu and put on quarantine at the intensive care unit in JIPMER.
How they contacted the virus is yet to be established

CHANDIGARH: Bracing up for winter to counter the spread of swine flu in the region, UT health department has constituted an advisory group to
examine the gravity of the situation and formulate policies accordingly.
One of the most important jobs assigned to the committee is to study the pattern and mutation of virus, if there is any. The panel will make recommendations for future planning and preparedness.
There are eight members in the committee, led by home-cum-health secretary Ram Niwas. Other members included UT director, health and family welfare, medical superintendents of three government hospitals, heads of community medicine and virology departments of PGI, medical director of INSCOL hospital and nodal officer for swine flu.
Talking to TOI, the health secretary said steps like prevention and control of swine flu were being undertaken and the committee?s role would only strengthen the programme. He added that residents were being made aware about precautionary measures through advertisements.
So far, 333 suspected patients have been tested for the virus and of them, 50 tested positive. Of all the positive patients, 28 are from Chandigarh and 11 each from Haryana and Punjab.
Incidentally, of 28 Chandigarh cases, 13 are doctors and constitute 45% of the cases. Of late, most of the cases are locally acquired. The incidence of positive cases has also gone up in the last one month with 21 cases reported during this period.
Prof Rajesh Kumar, head of Public Health School at PGI, said, ?World-over no mutation in the strain of virus has been reported so far.?

MOHALI: Four doctors of the private hospital where a swine flu patient recently passed away are being suspected of carrying H1N1 influenza. District
health authorities have directed the hospital to put the medicos under quarantine. Binu Gupta, 48, was the first H1N1 victim from Himachal Pradesh. She was undergoing treatment at Silver Oaks Hospital in Phase IX, where she passed away on Sunday.
Meanwhile, health authorities sent an epidemiologist to the hospital for checking if the ICU was safe enough to re-open after it was closed for 72 hours following Gupta?s death.
Dr Sunita Paul conducted a check to ascertain whether guidelines were being properly followed at the hospital. Mohali district health officer S P Surila said the doctor?s report would decide the future course of action.
??As four doctors are H1N1 suspects, directions have been issued to quarantine them and begin their treatment,?? he added. A day after the hospital was directed to explain the lapses found on its part while dealing with the swine flu patient, it submitted its reply to Surila. Admitting its fault of not informing district authorities about the patient, the hospital claimed it was not aware that Gupta had swine flu.
??They have assured that all guidelines will be followed properly in the future,?? said the district health officer

ROURKELA: A doctor enployed with SAIL tested positive for swine flu on Monday. A K Banwar, a doctor posted at SAIL's Kiriburu mines hospital, was
admitted to IGH here with severe respiratory problems on Thursday afternoon.
Suspecting swine flu, doctors sent his swab samples to Kolkata. The report came back positive on Monday. "We have kept him in isolation in the ICU and administered the necessary medicines," IGH deputy director S Mishra said. "We have also advised his wife, who is also a doctor at the same hospital, to take preventive drugs," Mishra added.
Banwar, who hails from Jharkhand, had gone to Jamshedpur during Durga Puja. He is suspected to have come in contact with an infected person during his stay at Jamshedpur.

CHANDIGARH: A 23-year-old doctor of PGI tested positive for swine flu on Sunday. The doctor is the colleague of the junior resident doctor from
department of psychiatry who had tested positive two days ago for the virus. Besides, one suspected patient, 40-year-old woman from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, was admitted to PGI, with symptoms of the disease.

Chandigarh, Oct 17 - A senior doctor at a leading hospital here has tested positive for the influenza A - virus, a health official said Saturday.
He is among the dozens of doctors and other medical staff here who have contracted swine flu.
'The patient is a resident doctor of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research -. He was exhibiting symptoms of swine flu like running nose, high fever and bad throat. We had collected his throat and nasal swab samples Thursday and his report has come positive,' a health official said.
'His condition is stable and he is responding well to treatment. Due to the nature of work, doctors and other hospital staff have become more prone to infection. We instructed them to follow all the precautionary measures and to remain extra cautious,' he said.
Till now, nearly 250 suspected cases of swine flu have been reported in Chandigarh hospitals, of which over 40 have proved positive. One casualty has been reported till now.
In Chandigarh, testing facility of this virus is available at the virology department of PGIMER, which is catering to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
Quarantined wards for the treatment of swine flu have been established at PGIMER, Government Medical College and Hospital and Government Hospital.

Puducherry: Five MBBS students of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here have tested positive for H1NI influenza.
Sources said the swab and blood samples of the five students were tested in the last two days and were found to be positive.
They have been given Tamiflu and put on quarantine at the intensive care unit in JIPMER.
How they contacted the virus is yet to be established

CHANDIGARH: Bracing up for winter to counter the spread of swine flu in the region, UT health department has constituted an advisory group to
examine the gravity of the situation and formulate policies accordingly.
One of the most important jobs assigned to the committee is to study the pattern and mutation of virus, if there is any. The panel will make recommendations for future planning and preparedness.
There are eight members in the committee, led by home-cum-health secretary Ram Niwas. Other members included UT director, health and family welfare, medical superintendents of three government hospitals, heads of community medicine and virology departments of PGI, medical director of INSCOL hospital and nodal officer for swine flu.
Talking to TOI, the health secretary said steps like prevention and control of swine flu were being undertaken and the committee?s role would only strengthen the programme. He added that residents were being made aware about precautionary measures through advertisements.
So far, 333 suspected patients have been tested for the virus and of them, 50 tested positive. Of all the positive patients, 28 are from Chandigarh and 11 each from Haryana and Punjab.
Incidentally, of 28 Chandigarh cases, 13 are doctors and constitute 45% of the cases. Of late, most of the cases are locally acquired. The incidence of positive cases has also gone up in the last one month with 21 cases reported during this period.
Prof Rajesh Kumar, head of Public Health School at PGI, said, ?World-over no mutation in the strain of virus has been reported so far.?

MOHALI: Four doctors of the private hospital where a swine flu patient recently passed away are being suspected of carrying H1N1 influenza. District
health authorities have directed the hospital to put the medicos under quarantine. Binu Gupta, 48, was the first H1N1 victim from Himachal Pradesh. She was undergoing treatment at Silver Oaks Hospital in Phase IX, where she passed away on Sunday.
Meanwhile, health authorities sent an epidemiologist to the hospital for checking if the ICU was safe enough to re-open after it was closed for 72 hours following Gupta?s death.
Dr Sunita Paul conducted a check to ascertain whether guidelines were being properly followed at the hospital. Mohali district health officer S P Surila said the doctor?s report would decide the future course of action.
??As four doctors are H1N1 suspects, directions have been issued to quarantine them and begin their treatment,?? he added. A day after the hospital was directed to explain the lapses found on its part while dealing with the swine flu patient, it submitted its reply to Surila. Admitting its fault of not informing district authorities about the patient, the hospital claimed it was not aware that Gupta had swine flu.
??They have assured that all guidelines will be followed properly in the future,?? said the district health officer
