Five suspected bird flu patients moved to AI center

Serang, Banten (ANTARA News) - After three days of medical treatment at the Serang General Hospital, five suspected bird flu patients were moved to the special Avian-Flu (AI) center at the Jakarta-based Persahabatan Hospital by four ambulances on Friday.

The five, identified as Mubinul Hamidi (16), his younger brothers Nujulul Hak (10) and Najatul Hidayat (8), Muhlas (30) and his younger sister Iklimah (17) were rushed to the general hospital on Wednesday after being treated at a local health service post.

Fathurahman, the father of the first three patients, said his children were suffering from fever with respiratory difficulty and cough before being taken to the health service post.

He said a day before they fell ill, about 60 ducks and chickens owned by him and his neighbors had died suddenly.

"Local agriculture officers who checked the dead fowls said they tested positive for bird flu," he said.

Bird flu has so far claimed the lives of 93 people in Indonesia.

The last fatality was a 47-year-old man who died at Persahabatan Hospital, after falling ill from the H5N1 virus on December 2.

At least 208 people have died in 12 countries in Asia and Africa of the disease, according to World Health Organization statistics.

ETA: So assuming the were sick for 4 days before consulting the doctor, I would think their symptoms began on 12/15?

There are conflicting reports here, some say 2 fell ill and 3 others later.
One report says, all fell ill at the same time.

"We are still awaiting test results for the remaining two to come out, but so far results have lowered fears of a cluster," Kandun said by telephone.

Authorities treat cases where family members living together show symptoms of bird flu with particular care since it could point to human-to-human transmission of the virus.

Although bird flu remains mostly an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily from person to person, triggering a global pandemic in which millions could die.

Indonesia has had the highest number of human infections globally with 115 confirmed human cases of bird flu, out of which 93 have been fatal.

The largest known cluster of human bird flu cases worldwide occurred in May 2006 in the Karo district of Indonesia's North Sumatra province, where as many as 7 people in an extended family died.

Millions of people in Indonesia, a complex archipelago comprising thousands of islands and hundreds of languages, live in close proximity to poultry, keeping backyard fowl for eggs and meat and to supplement their income.

This question is for one of the experts. When testing is done for H5N1, will this testing also find if there is another flu strain present...say H2N3 or some other novel strain? Would it detect it if it were a previously unseen clade of H5N1? These folks certainly seemed to have all the symptoms. (Question is...if it wasn't H5N1, what caused them all to fall ill with upper respiratory ailments at the same time?)

From six patients who were reconciled to the Persahabatan Hospital, Jakarta Timur, to Ahad (23/12), was gotten by one patient suspect bird flu that was treated intensively.
