The Arkansas Department of Health reported 10 influenza-related deaths over the past week, nearly doubling the state's death toll for the 2025-26 flu season.
According to the department's online flu dashboard, which was last updated Wednesday, a total of 21 flu deaths have been reported in Arkansas. The website lists 20 of the deaths as being of people age 65 or older. The age of the 21st person was not listed on the dashboard, which notes that counts of less than 10 are "suppressed."
A week earlier, the dashboard had listed a total of 11 deaths, including at least 10 that were of people 65 and older and one whose age was suppressed.
The department reported its 21st death of the previous flu season during the week of Jan. 29, 2025.
"There is often a delay between when a flu-related death or hospitalization happens and when it is officially reported," Porter said. "Because of this, an increase in reported deaths over a short period does not necessarily mean that those deaths occurred during that same time frame."
According to the dashboard, 652 Arkansans have been hospitalized with the flu this season, including 135 in the past week.
