Espírito Santo monitors 33 possible exposures to H5N1 avian flu

State Department of Health investigates to identify people who have had contact with infected birds; there is an individual in isolation

The State Department of Health of Espírito Santo (Sesa) reported on Wednesday, 17, which monitors 33 people who may have been exposed to the H5N1 avian influenza virus by contact with infected birds. According to the folder, one of the individuals had mild flu-like symptoms and is in isolation.

Field investigations began on Tuesday, 16, in the capital, Vitória, and in the municipalities of Cariacica and Marataízes. The focus was to identify people who had contact with contaminated birds. Last Monday, 15, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) issued an alert about the first cases detected in Brazil of avian influenza H5N1 in three wild birds on the coast of the state.

In Vitória, the 33 possible exposed to the virus were identified in Parque Fazendinha, a municipal unit with 23,000 m². Samples were collected, which were sent to the Central Laboratory of Public Health of Espírito Santo (Lacen-ES). This Thursday, 18, the material should be sent for analysis by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The secretariat said that there is no information about the deadline for disclosure of the results.

"Sesa clarifies that people who have had contact with birds diagnosed with avian influenza (H5N1 virus) should be monitored if they have flu-like symptoms for a period of ten days from contact with the contaminated bird or with suspected contamination," it said in a statement. "The population should strictly avoid contact with sick or dead birds, including wild birds."…https://veja.abril.com.br/saude/espi...-aviaria-h5n1/

Avian flu: 33 people were exposed and one has symptoms in ES

The first suspected case in humans is being monitored by the Department of Health, which has accompanied everyone who had contact with the bird found sick in Parque da Fazendinha, in Jardim Camburi

After the confirmation of three cases of avian influenza in Espírito Santo — the first in Brazil — the first suspected case of avian influenza in humans in Vitória was reported this Wednesday (17). The patient has mild flu-like symptoms and is in isolation, being monitored by the Vitória Health Department.

According to the Ministry of Health reported earlier this Wednesday evening, the suspected case is a 61-year-old man, an employee of the municipal park — formerly Fazendinha — where a bird was found with a positive result for the disease.

According to the agency, "the patient has mild flu symptoms and, according to the health surveillance protocol, is in isolation and monitored by health teams from the municipality", says the ministry.

In addition to the man who has symptoms, the State Department of Health (Sesa) identified another 32 people who had contact with the contaminated birds. All are being monitored by health teams.

A story on the the original infected birds. Now I see they having pretty lax protocol if the 2 original infected birds were brought to a facility that care for birds and they infected the 3rd bird!! What other animals do they have there? Are these vets some of those under monitoring? I have questions.

Birds with avian flu in ES were weakened and died
Three wild birds had the virus confirmed in the state. Understand how the identification and diagnosis process was carried out

The three birds identified in Espírito Santo with avian flu this Monday (15) were weakened and had already died when the result of the test that identified that they had the H5N1 virus came out.

The manager of the Espírito Santo Agricultural and Forestry Defense Institute (IDAF), Raoni Cipriano, explained when and how the birds were identified.

The first was found lying on the 7th of May on a beach in Marataizes, in the south of the state. By coincidence, the person who identified the weakened thirty-reis-flock was a veterinarian from Idaf himself, who took care to collect the bird safely.

The second bird, also a thirty-reis-flock, was found lying on the 8th under a tree in the Fazendinha park, in Jardim Camburi, which is just over 2 km from the beach, where the birds usually stay. It was collected by technicians from the Caiman Institute who work in the park.

The two were taken to the Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals (Ipram), in Cariacica. And there, they infected a third bird, a Brown Booby that had been recovering from a leg problem since January.

The three birds died days later, on May 10, according to the Idaf manager. One of them died from the disease and the other two were so debilitated that they had to be euthanized.

Idaf was notified of the suspicion by the Ipram veterinarian on the 10th. Soon after, the investigation and collection of samples was carried out to identify the H5N1 virus - which was confirmed this Monday (15th) -, according to actions foreseen in the surveillance plan for avian influenza.

The samples were processed at the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory of São Paulo (LFDA/SP), recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA), since 2016, as an international reference in the diagnosis of avian influenza.

"This quick and effective action by Idaf allowed the detection and confirmation of the results in a short period of time, accelerating the response and intensifying the prevention measures, already routinely developed in ES", informed the agency.

The two places where the birds passed, both Fazendinha and Ipram are isolated. At Ipram there are another 30 birds, but since then they have not shown symptoms.

The Ministry of Health has been monitoring and providing the necessary support to the state of Espírito Santo since the notification, this Wednesday (17), of a suspected case of avian influenza in humans in Vitória (ES).
He is a 61-year-old man, an employee of a park where a bird was found that tested positive for the disease. The patient has mild flu-like symptoms and, according to the health surveillance protocol, is in isolation and monitored by municipal health teams.
The sample from the suspected patient and 32 other people who also work in the park are being analyzed by the Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen) in Espírito Santo. After analysis, the samples will also be sent to Fiocruz, which is the reference laboratory for the state.
It is important to note that no confirmed cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) have been reported in humans in Brazil. The transmission of the disease occurs through contact with sick birds, living or dead. And, according to what has been observed in the world, the virus does not easily infect humans and, when it does, person-to-person transmission is usually not sustained.
The Ministry of Health reinforced, by means of a technical note, the guidelines for surveillance on possible suspected cases of avian influenza in humans after the alert of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), on 05/15, of the first cases in birds forests in Espírito Santo .

Another 4 wild birds with suspected avian flu are found in ES; one of them in the interior of the state

According to the Secretary of Agriculture of Espírito Santo (Seag), the animals were found in Vitória, Guarapari and Linhares, on the coast, and in Nova Venécia, inland.

Four more seabirds suspected of having avian flu were found in Espírito Santo, one of them in the interior of the state. According to the Espírito Santo Agricultural and Forestry Defense Institute (Idaf), the animals were rescued in Vitória , Guarapari , Linhares , on the North Coast, and in Nova Venécia , a municipality in the Northwest Region. They all died.

According to Idaf's Sanitary Defense and Animal Inspection manager, Raoni Cipriano, the fact that one of the birds is off the coast makes the agencies even more alert.
"There was a displacement of this bird. It could have become disoriented from the flock for some reason, it could have been due to illness, it could have been for another reason. We open an investigation on the spot. We start to investigate the region more carefully" , he said.

Also according to the manager, of the four birds found on this farm (18), two animals underwent euthanasia. The other two animals died naturally.
"The animal becomes apathetic, lacks coordination, loses sense and direction, its breathing becomes labored, symptoms of the flu, the flu. The animal has a discharge," said Raoni.

This Wednesday (17), the secretariat had already confirmed that another 26 birds were also sacrificed to contain the spread of the disease . Among the first species euthanized were boobs and terns, a cormorant, an owl, a well-te-vi, king parakeets and a chauá parrot.

"It is an outbreak containment measure, with the objective of protecting the health of the other birds that are in the environment and of the people who work with these birds", informed the secretary, who also highlighted that the measure is supported by decrees and federal and state laws, in addition to normative instructions from the Ministry of Agriculture and Ibama.

Also according to Seag, bearing in mind that the eventual dissemination of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus (IAAP - H5N1) can cause serious impacts, the Espírito Santo Agricultural and Forestry Defense Institute (IDAF) "is mapping the areas of focus and conducting inspections on the properties, with the aim of carrying out clinical surveillance, actively looking for animals with symptoms compatible with the disease and carrying out health education work with rural producers".

                      Confirmed cases

According to the alert from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) on Monday (15), the first two animals with confirmation of the disease in Espírito Santo were of the Thalasseus acuflavidus species, known as Trinta-réis-bando. A bird with the disease was rescued in the municipality of Marataízes , on the South Coast, and another in Jardim Camburi, Vitória.

A third bird also had avian flu confirmed in the state, according to the folder. It is Sula leucogaster, known as atobá-pardo, who had been at the Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals of Cariacica (Ipram), in Greater Vitória, since January, and was infected by the two terns that arrived there. . The three were weakened and died days after the infection.

According to the recommendation of the Ministry of Health , he is expected to leave isolation this Friday (19), 10 days after contact with the sick bird.

The other 32 people who work in the park have already been released from monitoring and remain without symptoms. The State Department of Health (Sesa) collected samples from all of them and the test results should come out early next week.

One of the possible infected no longer has flu-like symptoms; four other suspected episodes in birds were detected in the state

The Ministry of Health reported on the afternoon of Friday, 19, that two suspected cases of H5N1 avian influenza infection are under investigation in Espírito Santo.
A third possible episode was discarded. (61 yr old)

Earlier, the State Secretariat of Health of Espírito Santo (Sesa) said that one of the patients was already without flu-like symptoms and could leave home isolation on Friday, if there was no change in the condition.
the rest of the story is about previous reports..

According to the folder, 26 birds from the Institute of Research and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals (Ipram) had to be sacrificed as a preventive measure. Four other birds, of the thirty-réis flock species, showed symptoms of the disease and are being monitored.

On Wednesday, 17, Sesa announced that it was monitoring 33 people who could have been exposed to the virus by contact with infected birds and that one had mild flu-like symptoms. The suspected cases were identified in the capital, Vitória, in employees of Fazendinha Park, a municipal unit with 23,000 m².
According to the secretariat, samples of the possible infected were sent to the Central Laboratory of Public Health of Espírito Santo (Lacen-ES) and to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The results should be released next week.

Last Monday, 15, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) issued an alert about the first cases detected in Brazil of avian influenza H5N1 in three wild birds on the coast of the state. The four new possible cases recorded in birds were found in the municipalities of Nova Venécia, Itapemirim, Linhares and Vitória.

The secretariat reported that the euthanasia procedure of the 26 birds was performed to avoid the risk of local transmission and occurred with the follow-up of a veterinarian "without pain and with minimal stress".

"Sesa clarifies that people who have had contact with birds diagnosed with avian influenza (H5N1 virus) should be monitored if they have flu-like symptoms for a period of ten days from contact with the contaminated bird or with suspected contamination," it said in a statement. "The population should strictly avoid contact with sick or dead birds, including wild birds."

                          Worst H5N1 outbreak

In February, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned about the risks of an avian flu epidemic in the face of the worst outbreak of the disease since the 1990s. Between October 2021 and last month, more than 42 million cases of the disease were recorded in birds, causing 15 million deaths. Another 193 million animals had to be sacrificed. At the end of March, the first case of infection in a human being in Chile was confirmed.

To date, there are no known episodes of human-to-human transmission. Even so, the topic worries the scientific community, because the current flu vaccines protect only against the H1N1 and H3N2 strains of Influenza. In addition, there is the possibility of adaptation of the virus, something that is part of the nature of these microorganisms, or an outbreak triggered by the high number of cases among farmed birds and the frequent contact of humans with animals.
