With the drastic dip in H1N1 cases in the last few months, the district administration is mulling to propose the state government to withdraw the Epidemic Diseases Act, which was invoked in Pune on August 3, 2009 -- a day after the death of 14-year-old schoolgirl Reida Shaikh, the first casualty of the virus in the country. The act has been in force in the last 16 months to prevent the spread of the virus.

Under the Act, to avoid spread of the disease district collectors empowered to declare holidays in schools, cordon off areas, implement travel restrictions and quarantine suspected persons as well as people who had come directly in contact with suspected patients.
