Eight cases of monkeypox, task force to monitor testing kit, vaccine development: Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya

    AUGUST 02, 2022 15:57 IST

Eight cases of monkeypox have been reported so far in Indiaand a national task force has been set up to monitor the development of diagnostics and vaccines, Health Minister Mansukh Madaviya said on August 2.

Replying to queries in the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour, he informed the members about the various steps being taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and to develop testing kits and vaccines.

Till date eight cases of the disease have been detected in India, out of which five have foreign travel history, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare said.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has successfully isolated the monkeypox virus and an expression of interest has been floated for research institutions, vaccine and diagnostic kits manufacturers in India to take the virus strain for further research to develop a vaccine in the country, he added.

... Airport and port health officers have been instructed to remain vigilant and undertake rigorous health screening of incoming international passengers.

The Minister said the National Institute of Virology, Pune under ICMR has been designated as a referral laboratory for testing suspected cases. In addition, 15 other ICMR-VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory) network laboratories have been optimised to undertake diagnostic testing for monkeypox disease.

5 monkeypox cases in Delhi without int’l travel history suggest under-diagnosis of infection: Report
The study recently published in the Journal of Medical Virology has noted that the detection of monkeypox cases in Delhi without travel history to affected areas suggests the undetected circulation of the virus in the community.

A new report has described five cases of human monkeypox infection detected in New Delhi without any international travel history, suggesting under-diagnosed monkeypox infection in the community. Researchers from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Virology in Pune and AIIMS, New Delhi have emphasised the need for active surveillance of monkeypox virus (MPXV) in the high‐risk population such as men having sex with men and female sex workers.

On July 14, this year, India reported its first human monkeypox case from Kerala. Since then, 20 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been identified from Kerala (6) and New Delhi (14) till October 13, 2022. The study, published in the Journal of Medical Virology in October, noted that the cases observed in Kerala had well-defined epidemiological linkage, with international travel history and contact with suspected cases. The detection of monkeypox cases in Delhi without a travel history to endemic or affected areas suggests the undetected circulation of MPXV in the community.

“The confirmed monkeypox cases from New Delhi have no travel history to monkeypox endemic or current outbreak areas,” researchers said further adding that monkeypox cases were mild and recovered completely. “This emphasizes the significance of timely clinical and laboratory diagnosis for early detection and patient management leading to recovery without secondary complications,” lead author Dr Vineet Relhan from Maulana Azad Medical College has said in the report...

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Suspected Mpox case under investigation; patient put under isolation, no cause for alarm

Posted On: 08 SEP 2024 3:48PM by PIB Delhi

A young male patient, who recently travelled from a country currently experiencing Mpox (monkeypox) transmission, has been identified as a suspect case of Mpox. The patient has been isolated in a designated hospital and is currently stable.

Samples from the patient are being tested to confirm the presence of Mpox. The case is being managed in line with established protocols, and contact tracing is ongoing to identify potential sources and assess the impact within the country.

The development of this case is consistent with the earlier risk assessment conducted by the NCDC and there is no cause of any undue concern. The country is fully prepared to deal with such isolated travel related case and has robust measures in place to manage and mitigate any potential risk.

Presence of Mpox virus of West African clade 2 confirmed in Isolated Patient

Clade 2, not part of the current public health emergency

Patient stable, no immediate risk to public

Posted On: 09 SEP 2024 6:13PM by PIB Delhi

The previously suspected case of Mpox (monkeypox) has been verified as a travel-related infection. Laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of Mpox virus of the West African clade 2 in the patient. This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding clade 1 of mpox.

The individual, a young male who recently traveled from a country experiencing ongoing Mpox transmission, is currently isolated at a designated tertiary care isolation facility. The patient remains clinically stable and is without any systemic illness or comorbidities.

The case aligns with earlier risk assessments and continues to be managed according to established protocols. Public health measures, including contact tracing and monitoring, are actively in place to ensure the situation is contained. There is no indication of any widespread risk to the public at this time.

              What is Empox ?

Initially, empox was a zoonotic disease transmitted from animals to humans. But now it is a direct human-to-human disease. Although less severe, empox symptoms resemble those of smallpox, an orthopoxvirus infection that was declared eradicated worldwide in 1980.

              Disease transmission

M pox is not an airborne disease like covid or H1N1 influenza. The risk of infection is high by coming face-to-face with an infected person, direct skin-to-skin contact, sexual intercourse, touching bed and clothing, not following safety standards, etc.

              Symptoms

Initial symptoms include fever, severe headache, swelling of the sinuses, back pain, muscle pain, and lack of energy. Blisters and red spots begin to appear on the body within a week of the onset of fever. Most blisters are found on the face and limbs. Apart from this, they are also found on the palms, genitals and eyes.

              Defense

People who come into close contact with sick people without following established safety measures can get empox. Health care workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed virus infection and those handling infected person's secretions should take recommended infection control precautions to avoid transmission.

An mpox case involving a traveler in the southern state of Kerala was from the fast-spreading clade 1b variety, marking the country's first recorded case from the new strain, India said on Monday.
Manisha Verma, a spokesperson for the health ministry, confirmed the strain after news agency ANI cited official sources as saying that the mpox case reported in Kerala's Malappuram district last week belonged to clade 1.

The patient is a 38-year-old man who had travelled from the United Arab Emirates, Kerala authorities had said last week.
