    Meghalaya bans entry of poultry

Shillong, Dec 11: Taking in view that the bird flu is spreading to new areas in neighbouring Assam, Meghalaya on Thursday banned the entry of poultry and poultry products from Assam and Bangladesh.

<!--end of related-box-j-a-->"The ban comes into force with immediate effect. However, the ban does not imply to the sale of poultry and poultry products produced within the state," a Veterinary Department release here said.

A senior Veterinary official told that they were preparing to cull birds and poultry in the bordering areas with Assam as soon as the Centre asks to do so.

"Normally culling operations are done in a radius of 3 km of the place of disease outbreak. With the bird flu outbreak in Assam's Khanapara, lying along Assam-Meghalaya border, it is likely that culling would be done in the bordering areas of Meghalaya too," he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi district that borders Khanapara in Assam's Kamrup (Rural) district is on a visit to the bordering areas along with a team of Veterinary officials to take stock of the situation.

The government has set up control rooms in all districts to facilitate information to the poultry farms.

Veterinary officials have been regularly adopting measures to prevent spread of the disease into the state and Deputy Commissioners of all the districts have been alerted, sources said.

Meghalaya already has in place 150 rapid response teams along with 2,170 personnel protective equipment that were constituted last year after the outbreak of avian flu in West Bengal.

Import of poultry restricted in Meghalaya

Shillong (PTI): Following the outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring Assam, Meghalaya government has issued an order restricting the import of poultry products from Assam, West Bengal and the international border to the state's Garo hills region with immediate effect.
The order has been issued as a precautionary measure to prevent any outbreak of the disease that causes large-scale deaths of poultry and other birds, official sources said.
Stray cases of bird flu have recently been detected in Assam's Kamrup district, West Bengal and in several districts of Bangladesh which shares a vast border with West Garo Hills district. Consumers in Garo Hills depend heavily on the import of poultry products such as chicken and eggs from outside the state. This being the peak festive season, the demand is all the more high.

        Meghalaya bans poultry import
        RAJU DAS
SHILLONG, Dec 11 ? Meghalaya has imposed ban on chicken and other poultry products import following outbreak of avian flu in neighbouring Assam.

?Import of chicken and poultry products has been banned into Meghalaya due to outbreak of bird flu in Assam,? director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Dr. D Khonglah said.

However, sale of poultry and poultry products produced from the state would continue, he added.

The Veterinary Department has, meanwhile, started collecting blood samples from domestic fowls to check any strains of H5N1 virus.

?More rapid response teams have been deployed in Assam-Meghalaya border, especially in those areas bordering Assam?s Kamrup district,? Dr. Khonglah informed.

The Veterinary Department has set up control rooms here and all the district headquarters of the state to facilitate dissemination of information to poultry farm owners in Meghalaya.

Temporary check posts have also been set up along the international border with Bangladesh and Meghalaya-Assam boundary, Animal and Husbandry department official said.

Earlier, the Meghalaya Government constituted a task force headed by Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee to monitor cases of bird flu in the state.

The task force would coordinated with various departments like Forest, Veterinary, Health, Police, Agriculture and Public Health Engineering to check bird flu in state.

Respective Deputy Commissioners will co-ordinate all the activities at district level as Chairmen of the task forces.

Meanwhile, the state?s decision to ban entry of chicken and poultry products follows after authorities in Kamrup district culled more than 45,000 chickens and ducks after an outbreak of the deadly bird flu virus.

            Saturday, December 13, 2008, (Shillong)

Meghalaya on Friday began to cull birds and imposed stringent measures to check the spread of bird flu virus into the state from neighbouring Assam.

"As there are no poultry farms in the sparsely populated areas, pet birds would be culled in places like Pilangkata, Baridua," S F Khongwir, deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi district that borders Assam's Kamrup district said.

Avian influenza has broken out, affecting poultry, in Kamrup district. Around 70 veterinary officials and field staff have been sent to Ri Bhoi district.

Khongwir said prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the district and police have asked to maintain vigil to prevent import of poultry from Assam.

State's Veterinary Director D Khonglah, who was overseeing the operations on the spot, said over phone, "There is no confirmation of bird flu outbreak in the state. But the culling and burying of birds are being done as a preventive measure."

Compensation would be given to the owners of pet birds on the spot of culling. A senior veterinary official said the department had collected blood samples from birds and poultry from the Assam-Meghalaya border and have sent for tests for confirmatory tests in Bhopal.

The state has constituted 150 rapid response teams and opened control rooms to check the spread of the disease into Meghalaya.
