  • Italy - Avian flu outbreak in Varese area

Olgiate Olona (Varese), 17 November 2025 – An outbreak of avian influenza A H5 has been identified in a laying hen farm on the outskirts of Olgiate Olona, in the province of Varese.

The confirmation comes directly from the mayor Giovanni Montano, who through an official note communicated the immediate intervention of Ats Insubria Animal Health, responsible for the total blockade of the activity and quarantine. The farm has been isolated with a strict measure: at least 21 days of closure, time necessary to complete cleaning, sanitization and disinfestation operations carried out by a specialized company. A 3-kilometer Protection Zone and a 10-kilometer Surveillance Zone have been established around the structure, which also involve neighboring municipalities.

From the technical checks it emerges that the contagion is internal to the structure, not coming from outside. Precisely for this reason, Ats calls for maximum discipline in compliance with biosecurity measures: stop the movement of poultry, eggs, live birds and prohibition of unauthorized access to companies in the area.

On the public health front, however, the most awaited reassurance arrives. Ats Public Hygiene did not consider it necessary to impose prescriptions on citizens who live near the farm, nor on those who reside in the areas included in the protection zones. "For people and pets, the risk is very, very low," recalls Mayor Montano, "because the H5 virus is specific to birds. It is transmitted only by direct contact with infected animals, carcasses, excrement or contaminated environments".
